Erode Municipal Corporation
The Erode Municipal Corporation is a civic administrative body that governs the City of Erode, India. The Corporation consists of a legislative body, headed by the City Mayor and an executive body headed by the Corporation Commissioner. The corporation's headquarters is in the Municipal Corporation Building, Erode, near Panneer selvam Park.
History
Erode Municipal Council came into existence in the year of 1871 and was upgraded to Special Grade during the year 1980, with an area of just 7.4 km2.[1] In 2007, this Municipal limit covering only the Central Business District had a population of about 1,59,728 and it has been upgraded as a Municipal Corporation with effect from the very first of the year 2008. And in 2011, it has started to function as the integrated City Municipal Corporation by merging the nearby local bodies such as Surampatti, Veerappan Chatram, Periya Semur, The Erode City Municipal Corporation extends over an area of around 110 km² between River Cauvery on the East and NH-47 Bypass on the West, containing a population of about 5.5 Lakhs as per 2001 census. The total urban sprawl is divided into 4 Zones, each containing 15 Wards and each Ward containing nearly 10,000 of population and an average of 1.5lakhs in each Zone. The Corporation Mayor presides over the aligned 60 councillors who represent the 60 wards in the city.
The past municipal headquarters of Surampatti, Kasipalayam (E), Veerappan Chatram, Periya Semur will act as the Zonal Headquarters for each of the four Zones.
