Mauricio Leiva-Cock is a Colombian independent narrative filmmaker whose work has won numerous awards and has been seen by audiences worldwide. He is a founding member of the production company Fidelio Films and currently resides in Colombia.

Early life

Mauricio was born in Bogota, Colombia but was awarded a full tuition scholarship to attend the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane, Australia, where he received an undergraduate degree in film. After graduating with honors, Mauricio returned to Colombia where he wrote film criticism for El Tiempo (Colombia’s premiere newspaper), and worked as a camera assistant on various projects. In 2008 Mauricio decided to pursue a Film MFA at Columbia University where he received the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Fellowship, and a grant from the Colfuturo fund, a scholarship-loan program designed for excelling Colombian students. While attending graduate school in New York City, Mauricio also worked with Pitchfork Media, where he shot videos for groups such as Sonic Youth,^[1] Grizzly Bear,^[2] Hot Chip,^[3] Jonsi of Sigur Ros ^[4] and The National.^[5] Since graduating with honors from Columbia University in 2013, Mauricio has continued to make films with Laberinto Producciones, Babilla Cine and Fidelio Films.

Awards

Mauricio’s work has participated in festivals and artistic residences worldwide such as the Toronto International Film Festival Talent Lab, Tribeca All Access, Buenos Aires Talents, Morelia, Beijing, Biarritz, São Paulo, San Sebastian and Huesca. His first short film “Clankety Clank” won the ‘Best Colombian Short’ award at the Bogota Film Festival, the Specialized Press award at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Lebu, among other awards. His next short film, ‘Café con leche’ won the ShotsTV/Numericable Award at the Biarritz Festival Amerique Latine, France.^[6] 'Los Kaotikos' has screened in various film festivals and was awarded the Colombian Film Fund. He is currently in production of the IDARTES Fund winner short documentray 'Tomada' and the Colombian Film Fund winning short 'Tsuki'.^[7]

Mauricio’s scriptwriting has also won him numerous awards. His feature-length script, ‘Aquí Vivió y Murió Espiritu Perdomo’ was selected for the Cine Qua Non Lab Screenwriting Residence in Morelia, Mexico, the Buenos Aires Talents Development Workshop, the Bolivia Lab Screenwriting Lab in Cochabamba, Bolivia and the Ibermedia Cinefilia Lab in Colombia. The project was Quarterfinalist at the 2013 Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting,^[8] won the Script Development Award from Promimagenes Colombia in 2014 and received the Tribeca Film Institute Latin America Fund in 2016.^[9] He has written scripts for Jairo Carrillo, Oscar Ruiz Navia and is developing a TV series for colombian production house Dramax.^[10]

Mauricio has edited the films ‘Mambo Cool’, official selection at Mar del Plata, FIDMarseille and IndieLisboa. The Colombian short ‘Portraits’, was a Jury Award winner at Festival del Film Locarno and has played in over 50 international festivals. ‘Gloom’, was selected to the Festival de Cine de San Sebastian and won the Best Mexican Short Award at Guanajuato Film Festival, while ‘Cien Años Más Viejo” won the Colombian Film Fund for Short Documentary Production in 2014 and was awarded the best short prize at the Colombian Film Festival New York. He recently finalized editing El nuevo ritmo de Colombia, a feature documentary which will be broadcast by Caracol TV in Colombia.

Fidelio Films

Mauricio Leiva-Cock is a founding member of the production company Fidelio Films,^[11] a New York City-based independent film production company along with producers David Figueroa García, Mark Raso, and Mauro Mueller in 2010. All four of them met while studying at the MFA program in directing and screenwriting at Columbia University. The company has produced a number of acclaimed short films, winning twice in a row in the Student Academy Awards with Under in 2012^[12] and A World for Raúl in 2013.^[13] In 2014, for the third time in a row, they had a short "Perfidia" in the regional final of the Student Academy Awards. Their first feature film Copenhagen, featuring Gethin Anthony, Bodil Awards winner Frederikke Dahl Hansen, Sebastian Armesto, Mille Dinesen, Baard Owe, and Tamzin Merchant^[14] was theatrically released in North America in 2014.
