Martina Krupičková (Czech pronounced [Kru-pich-kov-ah]) (born 15 September 1975) is a Czech artist who paints in the Post-Impressionism style.
Early life
Martina Krupičková was born in the Czech town of Světlá nad Sázavou, approx. 100 km from Prague. She was the second child of Helena and Jiří Krupičkovi. The family maintain a 600m2 picturesque garden beside the Sázava River.
In 1990, one year after the Velvet Revolution, Krupičková commenced Fashion Design and Textile studies at a prestige school in Brno. These studies, lasting four years, improved her design, drawing and painting skills. However, it would be some time before these would be put into practice as the world was opening up to Czechs, who could now travel abroad relatively easily.
In 1995 Krupičková spent six months in London. In 1998 she spent six months traveling in the United States. In 1999 Krupičková returned to Prague and started to paint. Her first oil painting was a Christmas gift for her partner. She started with canvas sizes in the 100 x 100 cm range; all characterized by strong color and bold strokes on a black background playing with light and shadow. A palette knife was used in the creation of these paintings.
Recently, Krupičková has experimented with a red canvas background and also smaller canvases (40 x 40 cm). Quote: "I still use a palette knife but for the smaller pictures I sometimes need a small brush. Since that first painting in 1999, I believe I’ve developed my own style. The light is the most important part of the painting. It can give the right sparkle or completely destroy it. I try to capture the right balance of light and shadow to add depth."
Krupičková has since had 20 exhibitions, including a work in the 2008 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.[1]
She was interviewed on Czech Television CT1 Dobre Rano (17 June 2008),[2] and on Czech Television CT1 in the talkshow Všechnopárty (2 June 2009).[3]
