Maracha-Terego is a district in northwestern Uganda. It was formed in 2006 from Arua District.[1]
Location
The district is bordered by Yumbe District to the north, Arua District to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west and Koboko District to the northwest.[2] The town of Ovujo, situated in the middle of the district, is located approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi), by road, north of Arua, the largest city in the sub-region.[3] The coordinates of the district are:03 14N, 30 56E. (Latitude:3.23334; Longitude:30.93333).
Overview
The District consists of two counties; Maracha County, with headquarters at Maracha and Terego County, with headquarters at Terego.[4] From the inception of the district, the question of where to locate its headquarters has been a source of contention.[5][6] In February 2007, one group of elected officials from the district went to court to block the location of the new district headquarters in an opposing location.[7] As of January 2010, the wrangling is still on-going.[8]
Population
The 2002 national census estimated the district population at about 302,100, with an annual population growth rate of 4%. It is estimated that in 2010, the district population is approximately 413,500. See table below:
