Macon Road Baptist School is a private Baptist school with several locations in the Memphis, Tennessee area.
Overview
Macon Road's main campus, which has grades K4–12, is located in Arlington. The school has another K4–12 campus in the Berclair area of Memphis. Macon Road's other two campuses, which host pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, are in Lakeland and Oakland (Fayette County). Macon Road has around 750 K4–12 students, around 200 of which are in the 7–12th grades. The school mascot is the Kingsmen and the colors are blue, black, and white. The MRBS football and ladies soccer teams are the reigning state champions in the TAACS League.[3]
History
Macon Road opened in 1973 as a ministry of Macon Road Baptist Church, which was then located at the current campus on Berclair Road. Dr. Wayne Webb has headed the school since 1974. In 2001 MRBS opened its first secondary location at 11015 Highway 64 in Arlington; this new campus became known as the East Campus and added a grade every year until its first graduating class in 2012. Around the same time, the student population at East surpassed that of the Berclair Campus and East became the main campus. In 2004 the school bought a building in Lakeland, which was to hold kindergarten classes. In 2012 Macon Road opened a new kindergarten campus in Oakland in Fayette County. Academically, Macon Road has attempted to increase its horizons recently, adding several AP classes and a new science lab at the East Campus.[3] In 2012, Pastor Webb announced plans of building a church sanctuary building that would add ten new classrooms, start of construction is planned for 2014. In March 2014, Macon Road became accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED.[4]
Academics
Macon Road uses the Abeka Curriculum, produced by Pensacola Christian College, in most of its classes elementary through high school. All students are required to take a Bible class from K5-12th grade; a King James Version Bible is required. Elementary students must choose between band or choir in the third grade, and it is required to stay in one of these until high school, at which point they become electives. Once in high school, students take most generic high school courses at a standard level. AP English (11th and 12th grades) and AP Biology (12th grade) are the only Advanced Placement courses offered. Other electives include Yearbook, Personal Fitness, Christian Ethics, and various higher level sciences and maths including Anatomy and Physiology, Physics, and Advanced Math.[5] The school-wide average ACT composite score in 2012 was a 23.[6]
Fine Arts
Macon Road participates in Fine Arts through the Tennessee Association of Christian Schools (TACS). Macon Road students may participate in drama, speech, art, band, and choir, among other fine arts, in various competitions and performances throughout the year. In 2012 MRBS' High School Choir was given the opportunity to compete at the national level at the AACS Fine Arts Nationals at Bob Jones University. In 2013 an orchestra group (who placed 3rd) and a speech student competed at the same level.[7]
