The Mackinnon Memorial Hospital, also known as Broadford Hospital, is a community hospital, located in the village of Broadford on the Isle of Skye. It is run by NHS Highland and Argyll.[1] The hospital has an accident and emergency department (or ER) and a helicopter landing pad. An airfield for fixed-wing aircraft is nearby.
Rural practitioners
The hospital has 10 medical staff who are designated rural practitioners, general practitioners who have had specialised training in trauma and anaesthetics.[2] The rural practitioners have ongoing annual training and refreshing to maintain their extended role which is vital, since support from conventional hospital specialists is 100 miles away at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
History
Mackinnon Memorial opened in 1914 as a voluntary hospital.[3]
The hospital established a reputation for rural surgical care, with an important role played by general surgeon John Ball, who spent his entire consultant career in Broadford, retiring in 1999.[4]
The hospital appeared in the 1990 Scottish Television series Rescue.
