MDaemon Messaging Server[1] is a Windows-based email and groupware server developed by Alt-N Technologies, based in Grapevine, Texas.[2]

MDaemon's features include a built-in spam filter with Heuristic and Bayesian analysis, SSL and TLS encryption, public and shared folder support, mailing lists, web-based email client (WorldClient), support for sharing of groupware data (calendar, contacts, tasks & notes), over-the-air synchronization of mobile devices via ActiveSync, CalDAV, BlackBerry Internet Service, and an optional BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) plug-in.[1]

File Structure

MDaemon's main configuration files are stored in the MDaemon/App directory and email is stored in a flat-file structure within the MDaemon/Users directory.[3]

Early History

In the mid 1990s, Arvel Hathcock began writing MDaemon. Hathcock began writing software at the age of 14 on a TRS-80 model MC-10 that his father bought him. After developing bulletin board software for several companies, he joined Mailing List Systems Corporation. Hathcock became frustrated at the expense of the available email software and decided to write his own. In 1996 he founded Alt-N Technologies to produce and sell his email server, MDaemon.[4]

Additional Applications Included with MDaemon

WorldClient (Web-Based Email Client)

MDaemon includes a web-based email client (WorldClient) for browser-based access to email, birthday, calendars, contacts, documents, tasks and notes. Documents can be attached to messages or placed in a shared document repository via drag & drop. Custom access rights can be granted to public and shared folders for collaboration purposes. The integrated chat sidebar can be used to chat with other MDaemon users.[5]

Remote Administration (WebAdmin)

Remote Administration (WebAdmin) is included and can be used to configure MDaemon. The web-based remote administration tool provides access to most MDaemon settings, such as account management, security settings, mobile device management, and access to log files.[6]

Closed Instant Messaging (ComAgent)

Also included, the Closed Instant Messaging Client (ComAgent) features group chat, buddy list, file sharing, email notifications, and automatic address book synchronization.[7]

Optional Applications for MDaemon

SecurityPlus for MDaemon

SecurityPlus for MDaemon[8] provides antivirus and anti-spam features (beyond MDaemon's built-in spam filter features), including Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD) technology and Zero Hour Virus Outbreak Protection.[9]

Outlook Connector for MDaemon

Outlook Connector for MDaemon[8] provides groupware sharing and collaboration capabilities for Microsoft Outlook users. Outlook Connector includes folder sharing with custom access levels, groupware collaboration support, an out-of-office autoresponder, and multilingual support.[10]

ActiveSync for MDaemon

ActiveSync for MDaemon includes support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) (2.5, 12.1, 14.0, and 14.1 protocols), which is a separately licensed ActiveSync (AirSync) server. ActiveSync provides native synchronization of a user's email, calendar, contacts, and tasks data between the MDaemon server, WorldClient (Web-Based Email Client) or Outlook (using the Outlook Connector plug-in) account and an ActiveSync capable device. Other features include: customizable device IT policies, remote device wipe, remote device soft wipe, autodiscovery, multiple folder synchronization, global address lookup, SSL encrypted transmissions, device whitelists and blacklists, forgetting inactive devices, and device protocol restrictions.[11]

BlackBerry Enterprise Server

The optional, free BlackBerry for MDaemon component provides services equivalent to BlackBerry Enterprise Server for mobile devices with BlackBerry OS.
