This list of largest pension schemes in the United States involves two main groups. First, there are state government pension schemes, for public employees under state law. Second, there are collectively bargained pension groups, jointly managed between employer and employee representatives after the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947. In practice, Taft-Hartley plans have may units of local pension schemes, under an umbrella group.
