Karen Fisher is Waterloo Road's most least stayed Head-teacher, she brings with her a cheating husband Charlie Fisher a rebellious/renegade daughter Jess Fisher and bulimic son Harry Fisher, she is also later joined by her missing daughter Bex Fisher . Karen's top priority is encouraging well-rounded and socialized pupils, and to achieve this she wants to create a safe and positive school environment where kids can leave their trouble behind and concentrate on their schooling, but alongside this Karen's not afraid to discipline pupils who step out of line and her tough love policy means that exclusion is back on the table. She will do everything in her power to help a child, but won't tolerate her pupils using their personal lives as an excuse to disruptive behavior. Staff and pupils are divided over Karen's policy, and Waterloo Road will teach Karen a thing or two about patience and tolerance before the term is out. Karen is determined to rule by example and keep her work and home life separate, but hides a tragic past which she and her family are struggling to come to terms with, and this will test her ethos over the course of the series.
Her son Harry (Year 11) and daughter Jess (Year 12) frequently make this difficult. Karen was consumed by guilt - her eldest daughter Bex has been missing for over a year and Karen's obsession with tracking Bex down meant that she failed to notice that Jess was veering off the rails or that Harry developing bulimia. Even after Bex returned home (bringing her sordid past with her) Karen's total maternal focus was still on her eldest daughter - it wasn't until Bex finally re-settled back at Waterloo Road that Karen was able to relax a little. But with Bex now off studying at University, Karen is able to focus more attention on her two youngest children and their family will grow even closer as a result. As Karen's chaotic home life divides her loyalties, we'll see her place the needs of her family above those of her own career. Karen is making great changes to Waterloo Road.
Series 6
This saw Karen split from her husband Charlie, as Harry found out that he was having an affair with another woman. Karen also found out that her daughter Jess was veering off the rails. Karen and Jess had a feisty relationship they don't really talk much but when Karen wants to speak to Jess, Jess just keeps this deep dark secret inside of her. So when Karen found out about her son developing bulimia she tried to put a stop to it and left Jess in the dark, but when Karen found out about her daughter veering off the rails, she didn't do much because she didn't know what to do as Jess didn't talk to her mum about stuff like that as Jess thinks she will judge her and that when she is out she is her own person, but her mum wants to know more and disagrees with her straight away. Will there relationship get better or worse?
Series 7
This saw a new start for Karen and the Fisher Family. As her ex-husband was away with another woman and her eldest daughter Bex was away studying at University, it was just the three of them Karen, Jess and Harry. They seemed a happy family. In this series we see the Scotcher's arrive, Karen caught the eye of Rob Scotcher and her daughter caught the eye of Rob's son Aiden Scotcher, but were these Scotcher's bad news. Karen and Rob started dating; this didn't see the approval of her daughter Jess as she thought it would embarrass her as he was a site manager and her mum was the Head. Karen found out that Aiden had got her daughter Jess and Jess's best mate Vicki pregnant, she didn't want to be with Rob anymore after this because Aiden was bad news. It was Karen and her family's last day at Waterloo Road, this was only because Eleanor Chaudry had been giving information to the LEA which meant Karen was going to lose her job, Jess told Eleanor that if they were going to do something to save Karen's job and save Waterloo Road they needed to do it now, so Jess Fisher and Eleanor got a protest together, Jess did this because she thought her mum was great at being a head-teacher and she thought Karen was the best thing that could've happened to Waterloo Road, unfortunately this didn't work and Karen still left Waterloo Road. She left with Jess and Harry, and that was the last we saw of the Fisher Family.

Kyle Stack was a student at Waterloo Road Comprehensive School. He is played by George Sampson. He made his first appearance during the sixth series on 2 February 2011. Kyle arrives at Waterloo Road with his mother, Jackie Stack (Lizzie Roper). Waterloo Road is the last chance that Kyle gets, as he was expelled permanently from his last school. During his first day at Waterloo Road, Kyle is accused of sexually assaulting Bex Fisher (Tina O'Brien), which led to Kyle setting his Rottweiler, Manic loose. As the dog attacked Spanish teacher, Francesca Montoya (Karen David), Kyle showed a sensitive side to his personality when he saw his dog being taken away from him to be put down.
As he begins to settle into school, Kyle auditions for the upcoming pantomime, Cinderfella. He is often teased by Finn Sharkey (Jack McMullen), who gets Kyle taken out of the panto as the lead character and Finn replaces him. By the end of series six, Kyle and Finn finally begin a friendship as they end their rivalry, following Finn's fall from a bridge when attempting to save Denzil Kelly (Reece Douglas).
In series seven, Kyle is led to believe that he is the father of his girlfriend, Ali Redback (Kirsty Armstrong)'s baby. This turns out to be untrue once it is revealed that Ali was abused by her stepfather, Callum Pierson, making him the biological father of the baby. Kyle and many of his other friends are sad to discover that Sambuca Kelly (Holly Kenny) has died from a brain tumour, which was inoperable. All of the students from Waterloo Road pay their last respects to Sam and they plant a tree for her in memory. Kyle participates in a school protest to stop Waterloo Road from being closed down. He is given a round of applause by Eleanor Chaudry (Poppy Jhakra) when he throws an egg at Richard Whitman.
Throughout the rest of series seven, Kyle's personality is seen to worsen, especially when he joins a local gang called the Dale Sken Crew. The leader of the gang, Mason Price is arrested for knife crime and Kyle becomes friends with Tariq Siddiqui (Naveed Choudhry). During a fun run, Kyle and Tariq are seen by Daniel Chalk (Mark Benton) fronting up to a local gang, led by gang leader, Eugene. Kyle is expelled from school permanently when he slaps Nikki Boston (Heather Peace) across the face, and he is caught selling illegal vodka shots in school. Upon the recent events, involving the fact that Finn Sharkey set fire to an empty garage, in which Tariq's kid sister was, Kyle decides to help Tariq get revenge on Finn by shooting him with a crossbow. Tariq seems to be against the idea as he fears of going back to prison, so he tells Kyle that the crossbow has gone missing. However, Kyle finds the crossbow in the boys' changing rooms of the school and he attempts to shoot Finn, but it results in Josh Stevenson being shot instead. Kyle is arrested and sentenced to approximately 2 years in prison for ABH.
In the series eight finale, Kyle returns to Waterloo Road in Scotland. He tries to prove to all the staff there, including Tom Clarkson (Jason Done) that he has served his time in prison and he wants to return to school for a decent education. Christine Mulgrew (Laurie Brett), the new headmaster of the school decides to give Kyle a chance. It is revealed that during Kyle's time in prison, he assaulted an inmate for no reason, but Kyle reveals that he was being bullied when he was inside and after the inmate insulted his mum, Kyle banged the inmate's head into a sink. Kyle seems to show an interest in Rhiannon Salt (Rebecca Craven), who at first thinks he is using her just for a soft touch, but this is not true. Kyle is teased by Barry Barry (Carl Au) and after assaulting Barry with a chair, Kyle believes he has lost his chance at school and he runs away from Tom, hiding in his office. Kyle is next seen on top of the school roof, about to commit suicide as he believes he will go to prison for hurting Barry. Much of Kyle's past in prison is revealed, as he mentions he was beaten up by some inmates whilst inside and he refers to himself as a "mummy's boy" because he didn't fight back. Tom talks Kyle off the roof, but it results in Tom falling to his death. Feeling like it was his fault that Tom died, Kyle leaves Waterloo Road. It is rumoured that Kyle may have been arrested again, but this is unlikely true.

Nate Gurney was the homosexual boyfriend of Josh Stevenson. He made his first appearance on Episode 11 and made his last appearance on Episode 20. He was portrayed by Scott Haining.
Nate met Josh at his first day of Waterloo Road. He doesn't seem to have a very good relationship with his father, Matt, as he thought that his deceased older brother, Aaron, was the golden boy. However, before he died in the military, Nate confessed to Aaron that he was homosexual, and Aaron encouraged Nate to confess to their father of his sexuality.
Nate started secretly dating Josh as he was afraid that his father would disapprove of his sexuality, and he was right once his father discovered this at school. He had a talk with Nate as he promised to make things right between them, but told him to stay away from Josh. However, after having a talk with Josh's father Tom Clarkson, Nate phoned his father by a mobile and told him that he's going to have to deal with him dating Josh. This caused Matt to violently beat Tom up at a pub; Nate blamed himself for Tom's violent attack. This then caused problems for Nate and Josh but they both got over it.
Nate was last seen with Josh when he performed in the school production of 'Cinderfella' (a parody of Cinderella). He was never seen again throughout the entire show, and it is still unknown how and why he and Josh broke up.
