The Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- television anime is an adaptation of a light novel series written by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichirou Otsuka.
The adaptation was announced by Kadokawa in July 2015.[1] The series is directed by Masaharu Watanabe and written by Masahiro Yokotani, with animation by the studio White Fox. Kyuta Sakai is serving as both character designer and as chief animation director.[2] The first opening theme song was "Redo" by Konomi Suzuki, and the first ending theme was "STYX HELIX" and for episode 7 was "STRAIGHT BET", both sung by MYTH&ROID.[3] The second opening theme song, titled "Paradisus-Paradoxum", is performed by MYTH&ROID, while the second ending theme song, titled "Stay Alive", is performed by Rie Takahashi (for episode 14 was "theater D", sung by MYTH&ROID).[4]
The 25-episode series premiered on April 4, 2016[lower-alpha 1] with an extended 50-minute first episode. It is being broadcast on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, and AT-X.[5][6] The series is simulcast by Crunchyroll.[7]
The series has been licensed by Anime Limited in the United Kingdom.[8]
A series of shorts featuring super deformed versions of the characters, titled Re:Zero ~Starting Break Time From Zero~ (Re:ゼロから始める休憩時間(ブレイクタイム) Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Break Time) and produced by Studio Puyukai, aired on AT-X after each episode of the series, starting on April 8, 2016.[9][10] It was replaced by a new series of shorts, titled Re:PETIT ~Starting Life in Another World from PETIT~ (Re:プチから始める異世界生活 Re:Puchi kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu), which began airing on June 24, 2016.[lower-alpha 2][11] Crunchyroll acquired the streaming rights to both shorts.[12]

On the way home from the convenience store, Subaru finds himself in another world. As he scrambles around trying to figure out where he is, he converses with a food vendor, and then gets attacked by three hoodlums in an alley. Subaru is saved by a half-elf girl, who after learning that Subaru is unfamiliar with local history, geography and language introduces herself as Satella, and her companion, Puck; and he decides to return the favor by getting her insignia back that was stolen by Felt. Subaru and Satella travel to the loot house where Felt was going to sell the insignia only to find out that she had been killed, and shortly after entering the house they are both killed. Subaru's special ability then activates to rewind time and he finds himself back at the moment he was speaking with the vendor. He decides to head out to the loot house; he meets Felt and Rom, and negotiates with them for the insignia. The person who killed Subaru in the first timeline, Elsa, arrives and the two submit their offers for the insignia. Subaru offers his cell phone whose camera feature is perceived to be more valuable than the money Elsa has and Felt and Rom accepts his offer. However, Elsa kills everybody again when Subaru states his intention to give the insignia back to its original owner. Subaru revives back to the moment he was speaking with the vendor again. He sees Satella and greets her, but she becomes immediately offended when he calls her "Satella", the name of the "Jealous Witch", which is taboo. | |||||

Seemingly irritated by the name of "Jealous Witch", "Satella" leaves. Subaru attempts to prevent the insignia from being stolen, but the plan fails and he gets himself killed by the hoodlums in the alley while chasing Felt. Having revived back when he spoke with the vendor again, Subaru changes his approach by not meeting "Satella" and instead trying to buy the insignia from Felt before Elsa could negotiate. In the alley, he is saved by Reinhard, and Subaru asks him to tell "Satella" not to come to the loot house. As Subaru heads over to the loot house, he runs into with Elsa who took note about his unusual behavior. Subaru sees Felt and tells her what Rom said to him in the previous timeline about his cell phone. Rom appraises the phone and confirms its value, but Felt refuses to sell him the insignia without first hearing Elsa's offer due to his suspicious behavior. Someone comes knocking at the door and Subaru is worried that it is Elsa, but to his surprise it is "Satella", who he thought was told not to come to the house. | |||||

Shortly after "Satella" arrives, Elsa appears and begins attacking. Puck gains the upper hand with his ice magic, but he is forced to go to sleep as he loses his powers at night. Felt is ordered to flee the house, Rom is severely wounded, and "Satella" is getting exhausted while fighting Elsa. Reinhard then arrives and Elsa introduces herself as a bowel hunter. "Satella" heals Rom's wounds while Reinhard keeps Elsa distracted, then Reinhard uses a van Astrea sword technique to defeat Elsa. However, Elsa survived the attack and she slashes Subaru, who had taken the hit intended for "Satella", before retreating. "Satella" heals Subaru's wounds to save his life. At Subaru's request, she reveals her real name Emilia. Felt returns the insignia to Emilia as a gratitude. Reinhard initially intended to let Felt go, but after seeing the insignia glittering in her hand, he changes his mind and takes Felt with him, claiming that he can't overlook her crime of stealing the insignia despite being off-duty. Subaru wakes up at Roswaal's mansion and meets Beatrice in the library after wandering in an endless loop in the hallway. Beatrice drains his mana causing him to fall unconscious. He then wakes up again with the maid twins Ram and Rem in the bedroom. He then reunites with Emilia and Puck, and then meets Roswaal, who tells him that Emilia needs the insignia to be qualified as a candidate of the next monarch in the upcoming royal election. As gratitude for getting the insignia back, Subaru asks to work at the mansion as a butler. Working alongside Ram and Rem, Subaru struggles with all of his duties during his first five days on the job leading Roswaal to believe that he is better suited for another role with his carefree attitude. That night, Subaru talks to Emilia about his struggles and efforts on the job, and Emilia agrees to go on a date with him the next day to a village he visited earlier in the day with Rem to watch the kids. However, when Subaru wakes up he finds himself back at the time he woke up with Ram and Rem in the room, realizing that he died in his sleep that night. | |||||

Subaru is revived and is reintroduced to Rem and Ram. To figure out how he had died, Subaru attempts to recreate the timeline by trying to trigger events that had happened in the previous timeline, which works only partially because of events that he did not experience in the previous timeline, such as being taught to read and write by Ram. During chores, Subaru and Rem's relationship deepens which seems to bother Ram. While out shopping, Rem shows to care about her sister to an abnormal level, being commented by Subaru as "fanatical like a demon" where Rem then asks how Subaru thinks about demons. Afterwards, Emilia teaches Subaru since Rem and Ram are busy, where afterwards Subaru asks Emilia out on a date to a village to play with the kids and see the flower fields. Subaru attempts to stay up all night thinking about his actions in the new timeline, realizing he had fixed and missed certain events from the previous one and falls asleep. Subaru abruptly wakes up in the middle of the night and is violently sick. When he struggles to walk down a hallway, he is viciously attacked by an unseen assailant and killed once again. | |||||

Subaru is revived once again. To figure out how he was killed in the previous timelines, he chooses to take the role of a retainer in Roswaal's mansion. In a talk with Beatrice, she proposes two possible causes of his death: curse, which she desprises; draining of mana, which she thinks in this mansion only herself and Puck can do, but she denies that it was her who killed Subaru with this; she also states that it was her that healed him when he first arrived at the mansion. In a talk with Ram, Subaru tells her a folktale in which a blue demon sacrificed his own reputation to help a red demon, his friend, to get well with human. Ram comments that both demons are fool, and the red demon could have given up his own horn for this. She also advises Subaru not to tell the same story to Rem. Subaru also learns from the folktale books the legends about the dragon and the kingdom, and the story of the witch. In the fourth day in this timeline, Subaru decides to leave the mansion, and go to a cliff to observe what would happen in the mansion from outside. In the evening, he was suddenly attacked. After evading the first two impacts, he grabs the weapon of the assailant, forcing her to show herself, who, to his shock, turns out to be Rem. | |||||

Rem knocks Subaru down and tortures him. She suspects that Subaru belongs to a faction against Emilia, and states that he has a smell of witch before killing him. Subaru is revived once again in the mansion, and meets Ram and Rem again, with fear. Emilia worries about him, realizing he is in trouble; Subaru tries to tell her about his deaths and revivals, but just as he begins, a black shadow seemingly with hands overwhelms him. Two days later, Beatrice is sent to see what's bothering him; she also states that he has a strong smell of witch. Subaru asks her to guarantee his safety at the fourth night, which she grants by making a contract with him. On that night, he recalls Rem's attack on him, and feels his hands held by other hands, and then wakes up in Beatrice's room. He gets through the night in this room safely. In the next morning, he walks out of the room, and finds that Rem is dead, leaving Ram in grief. Roswaal states that she died of exhaustion, possibly caused by a curse. He and Emilia ask for clues for Rem's loss, which Subaru is unable to provide. Ram suspects Subaru and tries to attack him, but Beatrice protects him because of the contract. Subaru runs away from the mansion and goes to a cliff. Beatrice approaches him and informs him that the maid twin is incomplete with the loss of one, and offers to help him to escape the territory. Subaru realizes that it was the twin that held his hands in his sleep. Then Ram also arrives, swearing to kill Subaru. Believing that his own cowardice has led to Rem's tragedy, and despite Beatrice's protection, Subaru jumps off the cliff to his death announcing that he will definitely rescue everybody. | |||||

Subaru is revived again. Realizing that his trust level with the maid twins is important, he asks to work at the mansion as a butler again. While taking a break from work, Subaru asks Puck to teach him how to use magic to defeat the shaman working behind the scenes. Puck analyzes Subaru's mana to determine his attribute and finds out that his is shadow. During his training, Subaru struggles to utilize magic. Continuing with his work, he overexerts himself in performing his job to gain the trust of the twin maids and falls asleep lying on Emilia's lap and crying. That night, Subaru wakes up and asks Beatrice about detecting curses, learning that curses must be activated through physical contact, and through that piece of information he deduces that the curse came from the village. The next day, Subaru returns to work and gets both of the twins to agree to go with him to the village. | |||||

Subaru visits the village with Ram and Rem with the purpose of finding the culprit. When the three return from the village, Roswaal leaves for the night, which did not happen in the previous timelines. Subaru sees Beatrice to confirm that he was cursed and to locate where it was applied to on his body. Having traced the curse to the dog that bit him, Subaru realizes that the children are in danger and that night, he returns to the village with Rem. The children go missing and the two venture into the forest to find all but one of the missing children, who have been bitten by the dog. While Rem heals the children, Subaru goes searching for the last child and gets attacked by a Mabeast. Subaru defeats the Mabeast, but he gets surrounded by a pack of Mabeasts and Rem arrives to clear a path. The two run back to the village, but while buying time to get the children to safety, Rem gets overwhelmed. Rem unleashes the demon within her and goes berserk. With Rem about to be killed, Subaru stands in to take the attack. | |||||

Subaru wakes up the next day having survived the attack with the timely arrival of Emilia and Ram. The barrier surrounding the village is restored to keep it safe from Mabeasts. However, Subaru is still cursed and due to a large number of them applied, Beatrice is unable to lift them all within a half a day. So Subaru, having received a sword from the villagers as a reward, sets out into the forest to kill the dog controlling the Mabeasts to lift the curses with Ram, as well as turning Rem back to normal. Ram reveals to Subaru about the horn that makes them demons and that she does not have a horn. Subaru draws the Mabeasts by attempting to reveal the truth about his Return by Death and the two are chased. They fall down a cliff and are met by a pack of Mabeasts and a berserk Rem. Subaru puts his plan into motion by having Ram attack the Mabeasts while Subaru is launched towards Rem to try and hit her horn to regain her senses. | |||||

In the past, Ram and Rem lived in a demon village where the birth of twins is considered taboo. Ram was a prodigy, while Rem struggled with life. One day, Ram had her horn cut off and Rem had been blaming herself since then. Back in the present, Rem regains her senses after Subaru knocked her unconscious. Subaru, Ram, and Rem run away from the Mabeasts, and they encounter the dog shaman behind the attack. Subaru stays put to fight the shaman, who has transformed into a fearsome beast, in order to let the twins escape. Subaru stabs the shaman with his broken sword, but the attack did no damage. Just before he was about to be attacked, Roswaal arrives to defeat the shaman and the remaining Mabeasts, which removes all of the curses on Subaru. Back at the mansion, Subaru wakes up with Rem in the room, and Subaru tells Rem to keep on living for the future rather than to feel sorry for herself. Subaru has his long-awaited date with Emilia at the village. After returning to the mansion, Emilia is summoned to the capital and the two are escorted to the capital by Wilhelm and Felix. At the capital, Subaru sees the merchant and buys a bag full of apples. They then meet Julius and the sight of him chivalrously kissing Emilia's hand causes a blatantly jealous reaction by Subaru. Subaru then witnesses a redheaded young woman, Priscilla being chased by those same three hoodlums (that killed him in a previous timeline) in the alley, and he goes in to save Priscilla, who turns out didn't need his help. The hoodlums are chased away when Old Man Rom appears wondering where Felt had gone since the night Reinhard took her away. Subaru offers Priscilla an apple afterwards as Emilia arrives to get Subaru. The next day, Subaru breaks his promise with Emilia and accepts a ride to the castle in Priscilla's carriage (as her apple servant) and there, the candidates for the upcoming royal election gather. Emilia sees Subaru with Priscilla as Priscilla has declared Subaru to be her 'apple guy'. The fifth and final candidate appears and to everybody's surprise, it is Felt. | |||||

Reinhard introduces Felt as the fifth candidate, and the nobles are surprised to hear that the candidate is from the slums. After greeting Subaru and Reinhard (with a kick), Felt declares that she won't enter the royal election, and picks fight with the other candidates. Having enough seeing Emilia badmouthed in front of him, Subaru declares that he is Emilia's knight, even go as far as insulting the Knights of Lugunica when Julius says that he is not fit to claim to be a knight. Emilia denies that Subaru is her attendant, and resulting in him being thrown away from the room. Soon afterwards, Old Man Rom breaks into the throne room to take Felt away, though he is easily caught. As a desperate attempt to save him, Felt agrees to enter the royal election, and declares that she will destroy the current nation when she wins. Afterwards, Julius challenge Subaru due to his insult earlier in a mock battle, and in the process, beat Subaru half-dead in a one-sided battle. When Subaru wakes up, Emilia tells him that he will stay in the capital to recover, as she and Roswaal goes back to the mansion. When Subaru refuses, Emilia asks about his reasons on going so far to help her, and Subaru is unable to tell her about his ability nor what happen in the first timeline. Unable to understand each other, nor able to trust Subaru anymore, Emilia leaves him. | |||||

Subaru, accompanied by Rem, live at Karsten mansion for a while as a guest in order to get his gate healed by Felix. Frustrated that he is weak, Subaru trains with Wilhelm van Astrea to get stronger. Reinhard later comes to apologize to Subaru and tells him that he and Julius should sit down and talk rather than fight, since the fight is meaningless and cost them something; reputation for Julius and relationship with Emilia for Subaru. Despite that, Subaru shrug him off and ask him to return back. In the evening, Subaru asks Rem why does she accompany him, to which the latter answer that it's because she wants to. The next day, both of them go out to town, and Subaru meets Kadomon. The fruit seller tells him that because people fear of the Jealous Witch, they will not support Emilia for royal election, and warns him not to speak of the witch out loud in public. At night, Crusch asks Subaru to accompany her for a drink, and tells him to lift his face up, look forward, and reach out his hands. Felix then tells him that he should think how to make up with Emilia, and do it. While the advice manages to lift his spirits, Wilhelm states that Subaru does not seek strength anymore, suggesting they end their training. Rem approaches, telling them that something is occurring back at Mathers' domain. This makes Subaru instantly decide to go back, despite Crusch and Felix' warning that leaving would make him an enemy. The two are forced to take a detour due to White Whale blocking the road, now taking two and a half days. Later that night, Rem casts a spell to make Subaru sleep, returning to the mansion, while leaving him a note that she will be back to pick him up when the matter is over. The next day, enraged due to everyone leaving him, Subaru finds a man named Otto and asks him to send him to Roswaal's mansion. Half way there, Otto's ground dragon feels frightened, forcing Otto to turn back. Despite this, Subaru decides to walk alone for the rest of the journey. While traveling, a group of dark robed and hooded humans circle Subaru for a moment before disappearing. At dawn, he reaches Arlam, and finds dead bodies everywhere. Subaru looks for Rem, and as he reaches the mansion, he sees Rem's dead body lying on the ground as tears run down his cheek. | |||||

Subaru goes inside the mansion to see it littered with bodies. He eventually goes in to an icy room and freezes to death; then respawns back by the appa merchant's stall where he hugs Rem and loses his sanity. Crusch and her servant, Felix try to heal him from most problems but unfortunately cannot help with any mental conditions. Rem and Subaru decide to go home. Suddenly, their cart has been ambushed by men in robes; with one of them taking the montionless Subaru and the others attempting to eliminate Rem. Subaru then finds himself chained up and meets the leader of the men, Betelgeuse Romanée-Conti. Rem finds the place of meeting and attempts to destroy Betelgeuse and his men, but to no avail. Rem is then tortured by Betelgeuse and then left in a mess, with both arms and legs crushingly bent. Betelgeuse then leaves Subaru to die, however Rem with what little life she has, uses magic to cut the chains then tells Subaru to "live" before passing away. Subaru then carries Rem's body to the mansion, seeing piles of bodies along the way. He finally arrives at the mansion, only to find a dead Ram before a monstrous Puck appears outside the mansion and tells Subaru to "sleep along with my daughter" and decapitates him. Subaru then respawns back by the appa merchant's stall, then curses Betelgeuse. | |||||

Knowing that the Betelgeuse's cult is going to attack the mansion and village in three days, Subaru seeks help from the other princess candidates. He first asks for Crusch's aid, but her condition is that Emilia drops out of the royal election, which Subaru refuses. Next, he asks Priscilla and is asked to lick her foot. Unaware that it was meant to be a joke, Subaru complies and Priscilla kicks him and scolds him for lacking loyalty and devotion to Emilia. He then turns to Anastasia after passing by on the streets. Subaru engages in negotiation, but he ends up getting tricked into telling her crucial information about Crusch and Anastasia walks away letting Subaru know that understanding what the other party wants is the key to negotiation. Concluding that none of the other candidates are going to help, Subaru decides to head back to the mansion and village with Rem to evacuate everybody. While on the trip back riding in Otto's wagon, he gets shrouded in fog as he encounters the White Whale that forced him to take a detour during the previous timeline. He notices that one of the merchants has disappeared and Otto has no memory of him. | |||||

With the White Whale closing in, Rem decides to sacrifice herself to intercept it so that Subaru and Otto can get away. Rem knocks out Subaru and upon waking up, Otto has no memory of Rem. With the White Whale still in pursuit, Subaru realizes that it is a Mabeast that is attracted to him, and Otto pushes him off the wagon. After getting out of the fog, he meets up with the wagon he was riding in with Otto gone and is escorted the rest of the way alone. The next morning, the villagers find Subaru and then he wakes up in the mansion alongside Ram. When Subaru tells Ram about Rem, she has no memory of her, either. He also tells Emilia about Rem and likewise, she has no memory of her. Subaru decides to tell Emilia about 'Return by Death' expecting to be killed from doing so, but Emilia dies instead. Beatrice enters and instead of killing Subaru as he wanted her to do, she teleports him and Emilia out of the mansion. Subaru encounters Betelgeuse and his cult, and as they attempt to kill Subaru, Puck arrives to intercept their attacks. | |||||

Puck transforms into his monstrous self to kill Betelgeuse and his cult. He then kills Subaru by freezing him to death as punishment for letting Emilia die and depriving him of his reason for living. A despair-ridden Subaru respawns again at the merchant's stall. With Rem noticing a sudden change in his behavior, Subaru drags Rem into a park and engage in a serious conversation with her. Subaru asks Rem to run away with him, but she refuses as she would only do that with the Subaru she knows, and not his current self. The two reflect on their past struggles together, and Subaru gradually overcomes his sorrow and despair. Rem confesses her love for Subaru, but understands that Subaru's heart is for Emilia. His resolve renewed, Subaru sets out to become a hero, wanting to start again from zero. | |||||

Subaru changes his approach to defeating the White Whale first before going after the Witch's Cult. Knowing when the White Whale will strike from the previous timeline, Subaru decides to form an alliance with Crusch's camp to battle the whale in exchange for shared mining rights in Roswaal's domain. Anastasia's camp also agrees to join the campaign also viewing the whale's presence as detrimental to her. Subaru uses his cell phone to get Crusch to believe him about the time and location of the attack, while also telling her that he can use himself to draw the whale towards him. Wilhelm lets Subaru know that his wife Theresia was killed by the whale and has devoted his life to defeating it. The next day, Subaru, riding a ground dragon called Patrasche with Rem, and the armies for the Crusch and Anastasia camps head out to the Flugel tree to wait for the whale to appear. That night, the whale appears at the moment Subaru said it would and the battle begins. | |||||

The battle with the White Whale begins with the night banisher fired to temporarily change the appearance of the nighttime sky to daytime. Subaru and Rem draw the whale towards them with the Crusch and Anastasia armies attacking the whale, and Wilhelm slashing the whale at close range hoping to ground the whale. However, the whale is still floating in the sky after those attacks and it unleashes fog from its hidden glands. Subaru and Rem evades a fog blast, which Subaru figures out to be the reason why a person's existence was erased while the armies begin to lose soldiers, calling it a "Fog of Elimination". Subaru yells out his 'Return by Death' to draw the whale towards him and away from the injured soldiers and nearly ends up running into its mouth. Wilhelm and Ricardo's unit follow Subaru and relentlessly attack the whale, but they suffer setbacks as Wilhelm gets swallowed by it and Ricardo is badly injured. The fog clears, and three whales are now seen floating in the sky. | |||||

The armies become demoralized with the sudden appearance of three whales. While running with Crusch and watching the armies battle the whales, Subaru notices the difference in fighting strength and the gouged left eye in all three whales. This leads him to conclude that the other two whales are doppelgangers and that they only need to defeat the one that is keeping its distance from the armies. To draw the whale to the ground, Rem launches Subaru on an ice shard towards the whale. Subaru taunts it, and then falls to the ground realize what happened with Rem in the previous timeline to draw it towards the Flugel tree on the ground. Rem catches Subaru, and the armies use magic and explosives to destroy the base of the trunk thereby chopping though the tree and felling it down onto the passing whale. Immobilized by the tree, Wilhelm slashes away wildly at the whale to kill it and avenge Theresia's death. With the whale defeated, Subaru turns his attention to his original objective of saving Emilia and the villagers from the Witch's Cult. In recognition of his courage, the Crusch and Anastasia camps both provide an army for Subaru to fight the cult that includes Wilhelm, Felis, Julius, and the Pearlbaton siblings. | |||||

Subaru begins his attack on the Witch's Cult by approaching Betelgeuse using his smell of the Witch to make him believe that he is the Archbishop of Pride. Betelgeuse tells Subaru about the Gospel that he should have received as an Archbishop and Subaru responds by saying that he defiled it in order to make Betelgeuse lose his composure. With his guard down, Mimi and Tivey launch a surprise attack to destroy the hideout and Wilhelm kills Betelgeuse. However, it turns out that his soul got transferred into another body as he unleashes his unseen hands attack to kill some soldiers. Subaru is carried away from those hands and Wilhelm comes to rescue him. Having made a critical mistake that allowed soldiers to die, Wilhelm tells Subaru to keep on fighting. He is also told to make up with Julius. Subaru orders the army to ask Otto and his merchant guild to evacuate the mansion and the village. As Subaru goes to make up with Julius, he finds himself suddenly alone on the road as Ram mysteriously appears in a blue mist. | |||||

Subaru is attacked by a mysterious blue flower but manages to escape due to Ia, Julius' lesser spirit, which Julius sets onto Subaru in order to protect him. Subaru discovers that the attack was all an illusion produced by magic, After managing to free the rest of the soldiers and merchants from the enchantment, Subaru is attacked and attempted to be kidnapped by Ram due to a misunderstanding but is stopped when the misunderstanding is cleared up. During the evacuation of the villagers, Felis discovers that one of the merchants was secretly a part of the Witch's Cult and the merchant self-destructs, knocking out Subaru. When Subaru wakes up, he realizes that the village is under attack by the Witch's Cult. Subaru discovers that the Archbishop of Sloth's power is able to be transferred to other fingers and attempts to stop them. When confronting the final finger, Emilia shows up to battle and defeat him. After the battle, Ia suddenly abandons Subaru and he panics, feeling something inside of him and runs away into the forest. When chased after by Felis and Julius, Subaru warns them to go away before he can be fully possessed by Betelgeuse. Subaru manages to hold off Betelgeuse's control over him long enough to tell Felis and Julius to kill him. Julius and Felis reluctantly agree to kill Subaru. Before Julius can cut down Subaru, the scene shifts to Emilia, who suddenly turns to the forest area Subaru is in. | |||||

Subaru respawns back to the strategy meeting on the morning after the White Whale battle. Now aware that the cult can possess others, he formulates a new strategy to take out the fingers first before going after Betelgeuse himself. Wilhelm drops by the mansion to clear up the misunderstanding from the letter and to order the evacuation of the village. Then Subaru, wearing a cloak to mask his presence, arrives to convince Emilia that an attack is imminent and get her to follow through with the evacuation. Knowing that there are spies among the merchants, Subaru hands the plan of evacuation that is two hours behind schedule and the spy is apprehended. Subaru approaches Betelgeuse at the hideout offering to go through the ordeal to join the cult and become a new vessel. When he is asked to show his Gospel, instead he shows the metia he took from the spy to commence the surprise attack. Subaru runs away with Betelgeuse and the remaining fingers in pursuit. Mimi and Tivey arrive to take out the fingers, and Subaru draws Betelgeuse towards the bottom of the cliff which he jumped off to in a past timeline. Julius arrives and attacks Betelgeuse using Subaru's ability to see his unseen hands attack to assist him. | |||||

Subaru and Julius are fighting Betelgeuse by utilizing spirit arts to allow Julius to see through Subaru's eyes. Upon the conclusion of the battle, Betelgeuse attempts to once more gain control over Subaru's body. This time, however, Subaru speaks his 'Return by Death' to have Betelgeuse come in contact with the spirit of Satella, and, upon being rejected by the witch, Betelgeuse loses control over Subaru. After returning to his body, Betelgeuse causes a land-slide which buries him. Upon returning to the main group, Subaru learns that the explosives used by the double-agent in the previous timeline are now stowed in the cart carrying Emilia and the children. Subaru employs Otto and his blessing to reach Emilia in time to save her. After going through the forest and down a cliff, Betelgeuse makes a surprise return, his body now in pieces barely being held together by the unseen hands. Subaru sets Betelgeuse on fire then writes 'the end' in his Gospel book and, after seeing this, Betelgeuse finally dies. Reaching the carriage in time, Subaru tears up the cart in an effort to find the explosives while Emilia watches, shocked. Subaru then rides Patrasche, to the carcass of the White Whale at the base of the Flugel Tree and throws the explosives inside. After they detonate, he is shielded by his dragon but is still rendered unconscious from the blast. Subaru later awakens on Emilia's lap, and explains his feelings and reasoning for wanting to save her. As Subaru and Emilia reconcile, growing much closer to each other, he confesses his love for her, and Emilia, crying tears of joy, thanks Subaru for saving her. |
