List of Lovejoy episodes

This is a list of episodes of the British television show Lovejoy which first aired between 1986 and 1994. The first series was broadcast in 1986, followed by a five-year hiatus before the second series in 1991.

Though there was a recurring supporting cast, the only actor to appear in all 73 episodes was Ian McShane who played the eponymous role of Lovejoy, a likeable but roguish antiques dealer.

Series 1

"The Firefly Cage" 10 January 1986 Lovejoy, an East Anglian antiques dealer, acquires a new assistant, Eric. He also runs into Lady Jane Felsham and the two quickly form a bond which displeases her husband, Lord Alexander. Meanwhile, Lovejoy is intrigued by an elaborate copy of a Japanese firefly cage carved out of coal and why it is so important to a gang of thieves.
"The Axeman Cometh" 17 January 1986 When Lovejoy acquires a valuable welsh dresser from under the nose of a Charlie Gimbert he is pursued to London by the axe-wielding maniac who hid loot in the dresser, and the Inland Revenue.
"The Sting" 24 January 1986 Lovejoy is hired to recover some valuable Meissen porcelain figures. It requires all his wiles and help from the gang to trick Gimbert into handing them over.
"Friends, Romans and Enemies" 31 January 1986 Lovejoy is behind on his rent again so Gimbert has him go through Bexon's estate. Lovejoy finds clues Bexon left to a Roman Hoard hidden on the Isle of Man. When an American couple turn up and start stealing Bexon's things, Lovejoy sets off on a treasure hunt to find the hoard before they do.
"The Judas Pair" 7 February 1986 A collector is murdered and robbed of a set of Durrs flintlock duelling pistols. The victim's brother claims they were the legendary The Judas Pair and hires Lovejoy to recover them. When Lovejoy finds the pistols' turnkey, he and Jane are stalked by the killer who is desperate to get it back and complete the set.
"To Sleep No More" 14 February 1986 Sam, an expert copyist, keels over and dies of a heart attack on his way to meet Lovejoy. Sam's widow is robbed of a snuff box Sam left her, so Lovejoy steals it back for her and realises that Sam made it as a clue pointing to stash of stolen antiques. Lovejoy sets out to find them before Sam's accomplices do.
"The Real Thing" 21 February 1986 Lovejoy cons some demolishers out of a Victorian spiral staircase for a cottage Jane is renovating. To avoid them, Lovejoy heads to Norwich with Jane to help Tony Palmer set up a new antiques market. Lovejoy soon suspects the market isn't what it appears to be. Meanwhile, Lovejoy borrows a painting from Jane to settle the score with some con artists who scammed his local shopkeeper.
"The March of Time" 28 February 1986 Lovejoy thinks he's struck it rich when he finds some love letters from a soldier who was at The Battle of Waterloo hidden in an old clock. When the clock case is stolen, and Gimbert informs him that the originals are on display in the regiment's museum, Lovejoy investigates to find out what is going on.
"Death and Venice" (part one) 7 March 1986 When a dealer is murdered for a Venetian painting that Lovejoy identified as as a fake, the evidence leads to a wealthy American named Pinder and his beautiful daughter Caterina. They claim to belong to a syndicate that is preserving Venice's greatest treasures and want Lovejoy's assistance. Suspicious, Lovejoy travels to Venice to find out what is really going on.
"Death and Venice" (part two) 14 March 1986 Lovejoy establishes is bona fides to Pinder's other daughter Lavina by passing a drawing annotated by The Reliable Venetian Hand off as a forgery. He is put to work in the syndicate's secret workshop where he forms an alliance with a Scottish forger nicknamed Luciano. They try to figure out who is behind the disappearance of artworks and put a stop to it.

"Just Desserts" 6 January 1991 Lovejoy, (now sporting the mullet haircut), is released from prison after an 8 month sentence for dealing in stolen goods. Jane, who has kept in touch, picks him up and takes him out for lunch. She rents him a cottage on the estate and gives him her old Morris named Miriam to help him get back on his feet. Lovejoy wants to find out who set him up with a stolen dresser and exact compensation for his time inside.
"The Italian Venus" 13 January 1991 Jane asks Lovejoy to help a friend Emma who suspects that her artist husband Doug is doing something illegal. Doug comes from a wealthy aristocratic family but his elder brother Hugo inherited everything under Primogeniture. Lovejoy discovers that Doug is casting the fake bronzes that he has seen around. He hatches a scheme that exploits Hugo's greed for a missing 16th Century bronze Italian Venus to get Doug a share of his family's wealth and helps to set Doug up in business.
"Bin Diving" 20 January 1991 Eric falls foul of the local bin men when they catch him combing through rubbish on their patch. Jane asks Lovejoy to value a struggling widow's belongings. When she is burgled and a pair of antique shotguns are taken the police arrest Loveyjoy. He can't supply an alibi because he spent the night on Lady Jane's couch after his car broke down while Alexander was away. A bin man who found the shotguns' case at the tip is also arrested. The burglars offer to sell Eric the shotguns and they set a trap with the bin men. The shotguns fetch a good price at auction.
"Montezuma's Revenge" 27 January 1991 The manager of a heavy metal band asks Lovejoy to sell a gold statue because he believes it's cursed after a run of bad luck, including the band's drummer dying in a car crash. Lovejoy discovers the statue is from a Colombian gold raft made as a sacrificial offering and many buyers are interested in it. Lovejoy puts it up for auction and tries to woo a beautiful dealer who wants to repatriate it to South America. People with connections to the statue and the raft start turning up dead and Lovejoy is framed for the murders. Lovejoy goes on the run and steals the statue to flush out the real killer.
"Who Dares Sings" 3 February 1991 Lovejoy and Jane are outfitting a pub for Tinker's old army major. Miriam is stolen, Lovejoy is tricked into buying stolen furniture and the silver bowls that were supposed to be funding the operation have had their hallmarks removed to avoid tax and are only worth scrap value. Tinker bought a run down piano which was being propped up by a 2nd Edition of Chaucer's Collected Works, which ensures everybody comes out ahead. Lovejoy tips the thieves off when he is taking Jane out for lunch, and they are arrested trying to burgle Felsham Hall. Lovejoy learns that Tinker was only a corporal and not an officer.
"One Born Every Minute" 10 February 1991 Lovejoy is hired by a major to track down a travelling artist named Ashley Wilkes. Although highly talented, Wilkes spends his days doing paintings of local cottages and then seducing the bored housewives he sells them to. After Lovejoy finds Wilkes he is lent on by intelligence types. They aren't really interested in Wilkes but the major's wife who ran away with him to learn how to paint. They want to ensure that information her father had about the Malaysian Emergency doesn't come to light and embarrass powerful people.
"National Wealth" 17 February 1991 Lovejoy and Tinker are hired by Madeleine Gilbert, an old movie star whom Tinker admires. She needs to quietly auction off some antiques to cover unpaid death duties. When her house is robbed of all its furniture and fixtures Lovejoy suspects an inside job. The auctioneer confesses that her father has passed on information about her clients to a criminal gang owes money to. She helps Lovejoy figure out where the next job will be and they tip off the police.
"Sugar and Spice" 24 February 1991 Khadija, a girl who goes to Lovejoy's daughter's Public School, tries to sell Lovejoy some valuable antique pornography. At Parent's Day he talks to the Headmistress who denies all knowledge of the pornography and demands that Lovejoy pay fees owing. When Khadija returns with a man Lovejoy tries to warn him off and take the prints but they get away. The Headmistress expels Lovejoy's daughter and demands the pornography back. Lovejoy tracks down the man and steals the evidence he was using to blackmail Khadija's older sister. And has Jane pose as a buyer to flush out the collection and steals it back for the school.
"Raise the Hispanic" 3 March 1991 Lovejoy is fitting out a house for the daughter of a wealthy industrialist who is getting married. The groom goes missing and Lovejoy stumbles across his corpse, which is hidden by the killer. Lovejoy must track down the corpse and extract a confession from the killer in order to unravel a case of fraud connected to events in South America twenty years ago.
"Lily's Pearls" 10 March 1991 Lord Felsham has gone into business with a crass land developer. Lovejoy must get to the bottom of the scheme to protect his friends, even though Alexander refuses to listen to him. Meanwhile, a set of pearls belonging to the developer's wife that have been replaced with fakes multiple times cause confusion when false valuations are organised to cover it up.
"The Black Virgin of Vladimir" 24 March 1991 Lovejoy meets Harry Catapodis, a New York antiques dealer, at a charity auction. After Catapodis involves Lovejoy in a fraud on a Japanese Bank, Lovejoy checks out his friend Cassandra's collection and discovers that Catapodis has sold her several expensive fakes too. Lovejoy, Cassander and the Banker get even by selling Catapodis a fake of a Russian Icon by Andrei Rublev for three million pounds (plus 10% commission for Lovejoy).

In repeats "The Black Virgin of Vladimir" is sometimes cut into two parts with the first part entitled "Riding in Rollers".

"Friends in High Places" 12 January 1992 Lovejoy returns from 6 months in Spain having spent the proceeds of the Russian Icon con. Jane introduces him to a school friend Victoria, who Lovejoy falls for. Victoria asks Lovejoy to sell a Precolombian ring that her husband was murdered for in Peru. Lovejoy lines up a South American banker who moves in royal circles as a buyer. But when Jane is kidnapped and ransomed for the ring Lovejoy suspects he was behind it and shakes him down for two million pounds, which Victoria donates to a Peruvian charity. Victoria Cavero

"Out to Lunch" 19 January 1992 Lovejoy is spending a lot of time with Victoria, leaving Jane to deal with an important client. Lovejoy buys some Beckwith watercolours and sells them but the artist denounces them as fakes. Lovejoy proves that this was a PR stunt to boost sales for his exhibition. He makes a large profit on the watercolours and gets an oil painting for the insult to his reputation, which would suit their client's house. Eric is conned at an estate sale and sells his Yamaha motorcycle to cover the loss. Lovejoy buys him a Harley Davidson as compensation. Victoria Cavero

"No Strings" 26 January 1992 Lovejoy goes sailing with Victoria and asks her to marry him, but she doesn't want to remarry and returns to Peru. Lady Jane lets the Hothouse Flowers stay at Felsham Hall while they prepare for a charity concert. When the promoter steals the proceeds the band plan to sell an antique harp to pay people. Lovejoy tracks down the promoter to an auction where he is planning to buy a painting with the stolen money. Victoria Cavero

"The Napoleonic Commode" 10 January 1993 Lovejoy acquires an antique commode and tries to produce documents showing that it once belonged to Napoleon I, Emperor of France.
"The Ring" 17 January 1993 Lovejoy becomes involved in organising an illegal ring to try to bump up the price of some of his stock. When Lady Jane finds out she becomes furious.
"Second Fiddle" 24 January 1993 Lovejoy is puzzled when he is ordered to make a real Stradivarius violin look like a fake.
"The Colour of Mary" 31 January 1993 Charlie Gimbert is back in town and managing a top snooker player. He hires Lovejoy to acquire an antique billiards table which allegedly had belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots, an avid fan of billiards, who had brought the table back from France in 1561.
"Fly the Flag" 7 February 1993 Lovejoy becomes involved in an ownership dispute over a historic British battle flag, carried at the Battle of Lexington, between an old British military family and an American officer. In the process, however, he happens across some classic toy soldiers which might be worth even more.
"The Judgement of Solomon" 16 February 1993 Lovejoy is called in to help sell some gold Judaica. Suspicious, Lovejoy investigates and soon discovers the goods were actually looted in Krakow during the Second World War. Charlie Gimbert steps in to try to make a profit for himself.
"The Galloping Major" 23 February 1993 Lovejoy is offered an antique iron cannon that turns out to be a ton of trouble. A local arms expert tries to steal the cannon, after which it is discovered to be much more valuable than originally thought.
"God Helps Those" 1 March 1993 A series of ram raids results in a table of Lovejoy's, which he lent to another dealer, being destroyed.
"They Call Me Midas" 8 March 1993 Lovejoy's mentor arrives back on the scene and asks Lovejoy to help con an unscrupulous arts dealer.
"Irish Stew" 15 March 1993 Lovejoy and his associates travel to the Republic of Ireland to try to pick up some cheap bargains. While there he becomes involved in keeping an historic book out of the hands of a shady businessman.
"Dainty Dish" 22 March 1993 Lovejoy, Tinker and Eric are in Brighton, helping a friend of Lady Jane's, the Baroness. After valuable antique dinnerware is discovered, and Charlie Gimbert gets involved (and has the last laugh), the mood turns from holiday to wild plate chase.
"Taking the Pledge" 29 March 1993 Lovejoy helps an old acquaintance recover a valuable painting from an unscrupulous pawnbroker, while also attempting to keep word of the picture away from his ex-wife.
"Lovejoy Loses it" 5 April 1993 Lovejoy is a hit on TV but becomes arrogant and shuns his friends, but his fame makes him think he's losing his gift as a "divvie".

"Pig in a Poke" 5 September 1993 Eric Catchpole finds a stolen figure belonging to an important person in a house on a pig farm which Lady Jane Felsham is furnishing, Lovejoy has to return the figure before an important visit to the farm.
"Who Is the Fairest of Them All?" 12 September 1993 A reputedly haunted mirror is given to Lovejoy. Lady Jane leaves.
"A Going Concern" 19 September 1993 Lovejoy looks after Felsham Hall, which is up for sale, and decides to sell some antiques using the Hall as a showroom, upsetting the auctioneer in the process.
"The Kakiemon Tiger" 26 September 1993 One of Lovejoy's former debts winds up in the hands of a slimy local loan shark, who gives him only a few days to pay, or else. The only hope of repayment lies in a silver tankard, and hijacking a local auction (run by Charlotte Cavendish) to obtain an antique piece of Japanese pottery.
"Three Men and a Brittle Lady" 3 October 1993 A forger has conned Charlie. Lovejoy agrees to help find him.
"Ducking and Diving" 10 October 1993 Tinker and Eric visit Eric's Uncle Jack's pub; Eric decides to stay. Lovejoy agrees to show a couple around the antiques shops but also has a Welsh dresser to sell.
"Stones of Destiny" 17 October 1993 A Celtic cross is stolen from Charlotte's auction house after Lovejoy persuades the porter to let a friend in for a quick look. The pair end up in Wales trying to retrieve the cross.
"Poetic Licence" 24 October 1993 Charlotte is asked by a friend, who runs a nursing home, to sell some antiques. Someone tries to kill Lovejoy.
"The Peking Gun" 31 October 1993 Lovejoy agrees to handle the sale of a Chinese Ming cannon, for a middle aged widow. His attempts to sell the piece soon prompt the interest of warring the Tong, Chinese secret society factions who place their own special significance on the ancient weapon.
"Goose Bumps" 7 November 1993 Lovejoy is asked to help a local widow, whose husband – a fellow antiques dealer – has gone missing at sea, by selling two ceramic geese left in a storage locker. Meanwhile, Charlie Gimbert gets friendly with the local lawmakers, the dead antique dealer may not really be dead, and things get really friendly between Lovejoy and Charlotte.
"Swings and Roundabouts" 14 November 1993 Lovejoy heads to the fair and helps a carnival worker sell his collection of prized candlesticks, and also does his best to help clear the worker's name after he is framed for stealing valuables form local houses.
"Never Judge a Book by its Cover" 21 November 1993 Lovejoy comes across an old bible at two old ladies' house but their brother refuses to sell. Beth's father isn't happy about Beth working for Lovejoy.
"The Price of Fish" 28 November 1993 Lovejoy is invited to a weekend away with Charlotte. Charlie tries to evict Lovejoy.
"The Lost Colony" 27 December 1993 During a house sale Lovejoy meets an American lady, whose name also proves to be Lovejoy. When she comes under suspicion of stealing some items which once belonged to Sir Walter Raleigh, he pursues her to North Carolina to get them back only to find she is a member of one of the wealthiest families in the state.

Series 6

"Fair Exchange" 2 October 1994 Charlotte buys a painting from an aristocratic Polish couple and is then burgled, while Lovejoy is being seduced elsewhere. He drinks too much and wakes up to being found in possession of the stolen painting and is charged with assaulting Charlotte, but he has no memory of the previous night's events.
"Day of Reckoning" 9 October 1994 Lovejoy and Charlotte's relationship has its share of bumps. An old enemy returns from prison for revenge by kidnapping and threatening to kill Charlotte, leading Lovejoy, Tinker and Beth on a wild goose chase to uncover Charlotte's whereabouts before time runs out.
"Somewhere: Over the Rainbow?" 16 October 1994 Tinker disappears and Lovejoy sets out to find him.
"Double Edged Sword" 23 October 1994 A gangster asks Lovejoy in no uncertain terms to find a samurai sword.
"Guns and Roses" 30 October 1994 Lovejoy takes an old gun for repair but finds the gunsmith is having landlord troubles.
"The Last of the Uzkoks" 6 November 1994 Lovejoy is engaged to value a communion set, once owned by the Uzkoks. Charlie seems to have done a moonlight flit.
"Breaking the Broker" 13 November 1994 The police set up Tinker so they can get Lovejoy to help them.
"Fruit of the Desert" 20 November 1994 Lovejoy is conned by a phoney ex-diplomat
"Holding the Baby" 27 November 1994 Charlotte minds her friend's baby and gets locked in an antique shop. Lovejoy has a valuable antique stolen and he's also pestered by the VAT man.
"Last Tango in Lavenham" 4 December 1994 Tinker inherits a pub near his sister, Olive's, hotel. Beth is offered a job elsewhere, Charlotte is offered a job in New York, Lovejoy stops a local group of archaeological site raiders and finally proposes to Charlotte. Unfortunately, weak knees are Lovejoy's least concern on the day of the wedding. Lady Jane and Eric return for the wedding.
