Kuyili
Kuyili (Tamil: வீரமங்கை குயிலி) was an army commander of queen Velu Nachiar and revolutionary against the British East India Company's political spread in the 18th century. She belonged to the sambavar community in Sivaganga region.[1] She is known for her suicide attack in 1780. She applied ghee, set herself ablaze and jumped into the armoury of the British, securing victory for Velu Nachiyar.[2]
Honours and monuments
There are ballads and folk songs in praise of Kuyili.[3] The Tamil Nadu government has decided to honour freedom fighter Kuyili with a memorial in Sivaganga district.[4]
