The Koori Mail is an Australian newspaper written and owned by Indigenous Australians.[1] It has iconic status amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their supporters.
The Koori Mail was founded in 1991,[2] by Owen Carriage.[3] It is published fortnightly and available by subscription and in newsagents in every Australian state and territory.[1] It is a source of news and information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and events throughout Australia.[2] It covers general news as well as health, education, employment, culture, the arts, and sport.[1]
The Koori Mail is owned by Indigenous Australians through five Aboriginal community organisations based in northern New South Wales.[1] Its board of directors and editor are all Aboriginal people. The newspaper is based in Lismore.[2] It has correspondents and contributors throughout Australia.
More than 9150 copies of the Koori Mail are sold each fortnight.[2] The Koori Mail has been independently audited for its paid circulation, which continues to grow. Research indicates that it averages around 100,000 readers, many of whom access the newspaper through community councils, land councils, health and housing services, educational units, and Indigenous businesses.
