Kickback is a collection of rare and unreleased material from the funk group The Meters. The album includes a nine-minute cover of Neil Young's "Down by the River". The band had released another Neil Young cover on the Cabbage Alley album.[2]
Reception
According to Stephen Erlewine of Allmusic: The album is a satisfying listen for both hardcore fans and newbies alike. Even though he called the 1975–1976 recordings in this album "second-tier", he called the band "incredibly supple and engaging" and said the cover songs are "intriguing" and the band "lay[s] down a solid, irresistible groove" on their original songs.[1]
