Katherine Maher is the executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation. Her position was made permanent on June 23, 2016,[1] following her role as chief communications officer since April 2014.[2] She has previously worked for the World Bank, UNICEF, and at AccessNow.org, where she was their advocacy director.

Education

Maher was educated at the Arabic Language Institute of the American University in Cairo from 2002 to 2003, and New York University's College of Arts and Science from 2003 from where she received her bachelor's degree in 2005.[3]

Career

Maher has been executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation from March 2016 (acting director) to her permanent appointment in June 2016,[2] after her role as Foundation chief communications officer since April 2014.[2] She has previously worked for the World Bank, UNICEF, and at AccessNow.org,[4] where she was their advocacy director.[5][2][6]

At the World Bank, Maher was a consultant in technology for international development and democratization, working on ICT for accountability and governance, focusing on the role of mobile phones and other technologies in facilitating civil society and institutional reform, particularly in the Middle East and Africa.[7][8] She co-authored a chapter on "Making Government Mobile" of a World Bank publication about "Information and Communications for Development: Maximizing Mobile" (2012).[9]

Maher joined the Foundation as its chief communications officer in April 2014,[2][10][11] where she commented on U.S. copyright law.[12] She became the interim executive director almost two years later, in March 2016,[5] following the resignation of Lila Tretikov.[13] Her appointment as executive director was announced by Jimmy Wales on June 24, 2016 at Wikimania 2016, effective June 23, 2016.[1]
