Joseph Taylor Goodsir

Rev Joseph Taylor Goodsir FRSE (1815-1893) was a Scottish minister and theological author.

Life

He was born in Lower Largo in Fife on 16 September 1815, the second son of John Goodsir, Surgeon and his wife Elizabeth Dunbar Taylor. His elder brother was the anatomist John Goodsir, his younger brother Harry Goodsir died in the Franklin expedition.

He studied Divinity at Edinburgh University, sharing lodgings with his brother John Goodsir, Edward Forbes and others at 21 Lothian Street in Edinburgh. Here they founded a group named the Universal Brotherhood of the Friends of Truth.[1]

Upon ordination he returned to Lower Largo as their minister.

In 1868 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh his proposer being Sir William Turner (a friend of his brother). He resigned from the society in 1880.[2]

He died on 27 April 1893.
