Joseph Mayer (politician)
Joseph Mayer (1877 – November 18, 1942) was an American Republican Party politician, who served on the Hazleton, Pennsylvania City council, as Mayor of Belmar, New Jersey and on the Monmouth County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Biography
Born in Hazleton, Mayer lived in Lakewood, Ocean County before moving to Belmar in 1908.[1] Mayer held law, engineering and accountancy degrees, and was also a licensed real estate broker. He was a member of the American gas association, Illuminating engineers' society, New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers and Surveyors, Belmar Kiwanis club and Chamber of Commerce of Belmar. Before coming to Belmar he was engineer of the Hazleton, Pennsylvania, gas company, and president and engineer of Martin Maloney utilities, operating throughout several Eastern states.
Joseph Mayer was involved in the development of the Belmar Yacht basin, and as president of the Tri-County League of Municipalities lobbied for federal funding for beach erosion control.[2]
Mayer was elected Mayor of Belmar in 1924, and to the Board of Chosen Freeholders in the 1934 general election, and served until his death on November 18, 1942. He was chosen as Director of the Board in November 1938 to succeed Raymond L. Wyckoff, who had been elected County Clerk, and served in that capacity until his death.[3]
