John A. Mirisch is an American-Swedish movie studio executive and politician. He served as the Mayor of Beverly Hills, California from 2013 to 2014, and is serving again from 2016 to 2017.

Early life

John A. Mirisch grew up in Beverly Hills.[1][2] He has a brother, Richard Mirisch, and a sister, Amanda Goldberg.[2] His grandfather, Harold Mirisch, alongside his great-uncles Walter Mirisch (born 1921) and Marvin Mirisch (1918-2002), founded the Mirisch Company in 1957.[1][2] He attended Hawthorne Elementary and Beverly Hills High School.[1] He graduated from Yale University magna cum laude in 1985.[1]

Career

Mirisch started his career at 20th Century Fox.[1] He later worked as Managing Director of the Austrian office of United International Pictures, following by the Swedish office.[1] He served on the Boards of the Austrian and Swedish Film Distributors' Associations and the Swedish Academy Awards Selection Committee.[1] He currently works as an executive at Paramount Pictures.[2]

Mirisch was elected to the Beverly Hills City Council in 2009.[3] As councilor, he opposed plans to annex Holmby Hills, Los Angeles into the city of Beverly Hills.[4] He served as Vice Mayor of Beverly Hills in 2012, and became Mayor in 2013.[2][5][6][7][8] During the campaign, he was subject to a smear campaign, with slanderous e-mails and robocalls accusing him of being anti-Persian and anti-Semitic.[9] The Beverly Hills Weekly, which endorsed him, compared his run to Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.[9]

During his tenure as Mayor, Mirisch established the Sunshine Task Force to improve local governmental transparency and public participation.[2] He has also spearheaded the Beverly Hills Cultural Heritage Commission to honor the City's rich history and architectural legacy.[2] His term ended in March 2014, when Lili Bosse was sworn in as Mayor.[10]

He began his second term as mayor in March 2016.


Personal life

Mirisch has a son, Vin.[2] He is a member of the Geelong Football Club of the Australian Football League.[2] He is a dual Swedish-American citizen.[2]
