Jimmy Cozier (born 1954, Brooklyn, New York), is a New York City-based jazz musician.[1] He is a multi-reed instrumentalist, playing saxophones, flutes, and clarinets. He is the father of R&B singer Jimmy Cozier.[2]

He has performed and toured with Panama Francis, Sam Rivers,[3][4] Reggie Workman, Mongo Santamaria [5] and Abdullah Ibrahim.[6] He also played lead alto sax with the big bands of Cab Calloway,[7] Frank Foster, Charlie Persip, Jaki Byard and Chico O'Farrill.[8]

Background

Cozier studied saxophone with Bill Barron (musician), George Coleman and William "Buddy" Pearson and clarinet with Charles Russo of the New York City Opera. Cozier is the author of the The Jazz Improviser’s Woodshed Volumes 1-3[9] and is a member of the faculty of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Middle School Jazz Academy.[1] Cozier also leads ensemble workshops, where he teaches jazz improvisation.[10] He is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant.[1]
