Jeff Lanier is an American record producer and music executive, best known for his work with Macy Gray, City of the Sun.[1] He's held roles with Chesky Records, RoadRunner Records, and MAD Dragon Records.[2]
Beginnings
Lanier began his music career as an A&R for Unleashed3, a compilation put out by Drexel University student run record label, MAD Dragon Records. His work here led to a contract position with RoadRunner Records as an A&R scout. He spent the next few years following his near three-year stint at RoadRunner overseeing the careers of Recording Engineers in New York, helping many of them land credits on albums from the likes of Jay-Z, Dream Theater, Miley Cyrus, and others. He began producing and recording his own clients.[3]
Music career
Lanier served as either a member of or Director of A&R for the New Music Seminar's Artist on The Verge list from 2013-2016.[4] In 2015, he took over as Label Manager for Chesky Records, the classic audiophile label. In addition to his GM duties, A&R would play a large role, as he was responsible for the signing of Macy Gray, City of the Sun, and Melissa Menago.[5]
During this time, the label would see many of its albums debut and/or remain on the Billboard Charts—Macy Gray's Stripped (#3 Jazz), City of the Sun's to the sun and all the cities in between (#12 Jazz),[6] Alexis Cole's Dazzling Blue (#24 Jazz),[7] The New Appalachian's From the Mountaintop (#13 Bluegrass). City of the Sun's album would peak at #5 on the Global Spotify Viral 50 list.[8]
