Janey Godley (born 20 January 1961) is a Scottish comedian and writer.
Early life
Godley was brought up in Shettleston, Glasgow. Aged 18, Godley married Sean Storrie, also 18. Godley and Storrie have one child, a daughter, Ashley.[1]
Autobiography
In June 2005 her autobiography Handstands in the Dark was published in the UK and Ireland by Ebury Press.[2] It told the story of the alleged sexual abuse she endured as a child between the ages of 5 and 13, the murder of her mother, Glasgow's heroin 'plague' of the 1980s and her troubled marriage amid a world of gangsters.
Other work
In May 2005, she performed Good Godley! at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival; she won the Spirit of The Festival Award.[3]
She performed Domestic Godley throughout the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August; it won as 'Best Show' at the Funny Women Fringe Awards[4] and Janey won the 'Best Stand-Up Award'[5] as the funniest woman on the Fringe and "one of the most prolific and extraordinary stand-up comedians working in the UK".[6]
In 2009, she appeared as a psychic in the BBC1 Scotland Soap Opera River City.[7] She performed Domestic Godley at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival in May.[8]
Godley achieved some notoriety in June 2016 when attempting to greet Donald Trump at his Turnberry golf resort with a hand-written banner reading: 'Trump is a Cunt', although she was prevented by Police Scotland from approaching her subject.[9]
