Jack Coulter (born 1994) is an abstract expressionist painter and photographer from Belfast.
Life and work
Coulter's work expresses intense emotion. He grew up surrounded by abstract art and from an early age became influenced by the Abstract Expressionist artists of the 1940s and his aunt Christine, who was an abstract printmaker.[1]
Coulter has synesthesia. In an interview with The Independent, Coulter's earliest memories of his condition date back to childhood, where he recalls the sound of his own heartbeat resonating pulses of colour.[2]
In 2015, he provided the artwork for singer-songwriter SOAK's debut album Before We Forgot How to Dream, which was nominated for the 2015 Mercury Music Prize.[3] The CD booklet and vinyl sleeve consists of three of Coulter's photographs and two of his paintings.[4][5]
Coulter produced a limited-edition print exclusively for the 2015 GQ Men of The Year Awards, which was received by winners and presenters of the awards including Samuel L. Jackson, Keith Richards and Sam Smith.[6][7]
In June 2016, Coulter was chosen by M&C Saatchi to collaborate with worldwide music streaming service Deezer, where he produced a 'musical painting' for Glastonbury Festival. Coulter's painting attracted worldwide attention and acclaim, it was featured in The Independent, The Guardian, BBC, Yahoo, BT Group, AOL, The Irish Examiner, SB.TV and Digital Spy.
At 21 years old, Coulter's painting titled '21' was purchased for the Arts Council Collection, making him the youngest artist to be featured.
