Isabella Pringle
Isabella (Ella) Pringle (1876–1963) was the first female Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. She was elected to the Fellowship in 1929.[1] Dr Pringle practised as a medical missionary in Manchuria before a pioneering career in child health.
Life
Isabella Pringle was born on December 1, 1876 in Edinburgh. She was born into a time where the opinion on women in medicine was evolving. Following in the wake of Sophia Jex-Blake, Pringle spent several years in academic secretarial jobs before attending classes at Edinburgh University where she graduated MBChB in 1909 at the age of 33. After her residency she travelled to Manchuria to work as a medical missionary until 1916. A combination of ill health and a developing interest in maternity and child welfare led Pringle to take on further residencies at the Royal Infirmary and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. She passed the Scottish DPH examinations and moved to Paisley where she headed the new maternity and child welfare scheme.
Dr Pringle was able to complete her MD in 1921 and in 1925 she was able to enter and pass the MRCPE examinations. She then moved to Edinburgh where she became senior assistant medical officer in the maternity and child welfare service of the City Corporation. She became the first female Fellow of the RCPE in 1929.
She died on May 27, 1963.[2]
