ISIS Mapping
The ISIS Mapping Initiative, also known as "ISIS Mapping," is a project of the Information Science and Information Studies certificate program at Duke University. It seeks to use digital geolocation devices to create multimedia maps and empower remote areas of the world. A prototype was created in Durham, North Carolina in Spring 2009. The project will next be tested in the field at Duke University's Women's Institute for Secondary Education and Research (WISER) in Muhuru Bay, Kenya.
Mission
The mission of the ISIS Mapping Initiative is to "help you map your world." The project seeks to empower distant and uncharted areas of the globe with interactive multimedia mapping technology to foster communication, understanding and new spatial representations.
Toolkit
The current devices in the ISIS Mapping toolkit include the Nokia N95 smartphone, the Nikon Coolpix P6000 digital camera, the Flip Video Mino HD camcorder, and the LaCie Rugged Hard Disk (for storage/archiving purposes). These recording devices have the capability of taking geotagged media content. Recorded photos and videos will then be layered into Google Earth to create interactive media maps.
