Health in Malaysia

Malaysia has a young population. In 2010 half the population was under 25.

Life expectancy at birth was 74 at birth and 19 at age 60. According to the World Health Organisation health status in Malaysia is relatively good, and the country is on target to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.[1]

The proportion of elderly people is rising rapidly, and with it the numbers of people with chronic conditions. Between 2002 and 2012 the numbers of people with hypertension rose by 43% and of diabetes by 88%. From 1996 to 2011 the proportion of the population who are obese increased from 5% to 15%.[2]
