Harrison Afful (born 24 July 1986 in Tema), nicknamed The King, is a Ghanaian international footballer, who currently plays as a defender for Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew SC in the United States.[2]
Club career
Afful is a product of the Feyenoord Academy and had trials with Feyenoord and K.V. Mechelen in the summer of 2008, and in November 2008, he won the One Touch best player award.[3] Affulinho went out on loan to Asante Kotoko from 2007 to 2009.[4]
Afful played in some friendly matches for Helsingborgs IF but could not firm up a deal,[5] and instead moved to Tunisian side Espérance. In the 2011 CAF Champions League Final Afful came on as a substitute in the second leg, scoring the game's only goal to win the continental title against Wydad Casablanca.[6]
On July 30, 2015, Afful signed a contract with Major League Soccer club Columbus Crew SC.[7] He made his debut for Columbus Crew on August 22, 2015, against Sporting KC in a 3-2 win.
International career
Ghana national team
Afful plays at international level for his native Ghana and his first full match was in Ghana's 2–1 loss to Mexico on Wednesday March 26, 2008. He played as left fullback in this match.[8]
He captained the Black Stars for the first time in their 3-2 victory over Congo on Tuesday September 1, 2015.[9]
- 2008 African Cup of Nations
Afful was part of the Ghana squad for the 2008 African Cup of Nations which was hosted on his home soil. His debut match was against the Ivory Coast in the 2008 26th MTN African Cup of Nations hosted by Ghana.
He was part of the 2015 African Cup of Nations team that won a silver medal.
