Captains and Roles of Responsibility

The 'Captain' system is a feature of the school. Once students enter Year 10 they are given the choice to apply to for a number of roles including Form Captain, Sports Captain, Music Captain, Science Prefect, ICT Prefect, and a whole host of other roles are available. The role of Form Captain includes looking after and mentoring younger students, arranging activities and helping at extra curricular events. Sports Captains arrange sporting activities for the rest of the students in the school. Music Captains are involved in at least one music club and help to create maintain the music room. Other roles help out the prefect co-ordinator, leaders of the captains and prefects, to maintain their department. Out of those who apply, two students are offered the post of School Captain; the equivalent of Head Boy and Girl. The post includes organising the prefects, captains and prefect co-ordinators, mentoring younger students and representing the school at various events and functions. Music Captains help manage the Music Department, organising recitals, helping to run clubs and inter-school activities, as well and helping to set up and run the concerts.

A range of other responsibilities have been created within the school, including peer mentors and a school council. [2]

Awards

Before the school breaks up for the Easter Holidays, the school holds an awards ceremony during the End of Term Assembly, giving out many awards for outstanding achievement during the year. These awards mostly go to Year Eleven students. Awards include Academic Honours in particular subjects, the Bayliss Award for Drama, the Lady Burton Cup for Outstanding Individual Achievement and the School English Award for excellent achievement in English. Other awards are also available throughout the year, including the school's own recognition of sporting achievement in the 'colour' and 'half colour' system, where pupils may be awarded in sports in which they excel.

Sixth form

The school does not have a sixth form attached to it. Because of this the large majority of students that want to pursue Further Education continue to Colchester Sixth Form College, Northgate Sixth Form, Colchester Royal Grammar School, Suffolk New College or Suffolk One.
