H. T. Sangliana (born 1 July 1943) was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Bangalore North of Karnataka from the BJP, but lost the election for 15th Lok Sabha from the same seat. He was given the post of Vice Chairperson, National Commission for Minorities, Govt. of India, with a status equivalent to the Minister of State at the Center.[1]
He is a native of the Indian state of Mizoram. He is a highly decorated police officer, who joined the elite Indian Police Service and was allotted the Karnataka Cadre. He held the post Commissioner of Police of Bangalore city. During this period he solved many famous cases including Fake Stump Paper cases worth more than rupees 50 crore by arresting its King Pin and a number of serving and ex-police officers who connive with him. During his service as a police officer, he had high and extraordinarily impressive service record.
After retiring, on invitation by BJP he ran for the old Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituency for the BJP and defeated 34 other candidates. He was expelled from BJP for voting in favour civilian nuclear deal with the USA for which a no confidence motion was moved against the UPA in Lok Sabha on July 22, 2008, and then joined the [Indian National Congress. He was contesting the new Bangalore Central constituency for the INC in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Dr.Sangliana was defeated by BJP candidate Mr.P.C.Mohan by 59,665 votes.[2]
HT Sangliana is one among the 160 international delegates to join US president-elect Barack Obama at his breakfast table on February 5, 2008.[3] Three films have been made about Sangliana. He was portrayed as a super-cop in the Kannada movie "S.P.Sangliana" (1988) starring Shankar Nag and Ambareesh.[4] Dr Sangliana is the first and only one living unifrm donning officer who is the subject of 3 cinemas while still serving unlike those on whom films were made in the world.
Career
Earlier in his trail he did memorable stint as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Bangalore City, as also DCP, Law & Order. He hit the limelight for eliminating the menace of illegal parking and all the major traffic problems of a crowded city ruthlessly, without bowing to the demands of interfering politicians.[5] He retired from Federal Indian Police Service after 36 long years on July 1, 2003 as Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons.
