Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) [1] is the only petrochemical producing company headquartered in the Kingdom of Bahrain and sells its products both locally and exports to other gulf countries and beyond, including U.S., China, India, Pakistan among others.
GPIC is jointly owned by three major governmental institutions, namely, the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) from the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Petrochemical Industries Co. (PIC) from the State of Kuwait.
Established with a paid up capital of $160 million, the Company employs 481 people of whom 92% are Bahrainis and considers its national employees its true asset and continuous catalyst for all of its international, regional and local achievements.
Its operations that involve natural gas purchases, employment and training of Bahraini nationals, utilization of local contractors, power consumption and other financial and commercial operations inject around $200 million annually into the national economy. GPIC uses natural gas which is available locally, as a basis for the production of ammonia, urea and methanol, which are its sole products.
GPIC strives to protect the environment through many environmental initiatives such as a fish farm, bird sanctuary, palm tree plantations and herbal garden that have been established on site, among others.[2]Also, to manage the greenhouse gas emissions, the Middle East’s first carbon dioxide recovery plant was commissioned at GPIC in 2010. It has the capacity to capture 450 metric tons of carbon dioxide per day from the reformer flue gases to improve its carbon foot print.
