Gregory King is a sound designer and the owner of King Soundworks.

Career

Gregory King was born in 1966 in Montreal, Quebec.[1] King's first professional job in sound design came in 1986, when he was hired by seasoned film sound editors Nolan Roberts and Alban Streeter.[2] That year he started out as a sound effects editor for episodes of the television shows Night Heat on CTV and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.[3] The beginning of his career largely focused on sound design within the television industry and playing in bands as a musician in Toronto. During the late 1980s he worked in sound design at Filmhouse, a studio now known as Deluxe Lab,[4] and in 1991 formed the feature film sound editorial firm Sound Dogs with partner Nelson Ferreira.[5]

Over the first decade of his career King worked as a sound editor on television shows including Friday the 13th: The Series, War of the Worlds, Dracula: The Series, Top Cops, Sweating Bullets, Secret Service, and Side Effects. He also worked as Supervising sound editor on films including The Harvest, Conflict of Interest, The Chase, and The Santa Clause.[3] In 1994 he moved to Los Angeles, forming Sound Dogs US in 1995 with fellow sound designers Robert Grieve and Robert Nokes[5] and launching a large online sound effects archive in May 1997 called Sounddogs.com.[4] In the late 1990s the projects King was involved with as Supervising sound designer included The Craft, The Cable Guy, Ghosts of Mississippi, The American President, Father of the Bride Part II, Very Bad Things, Homegrown, The Insider, and Fantasia 2000. The Insider was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound in 1999. King's work on the film involved a great amount of artistic freedom, as he worked with director Michael Mann.[4] Other directors King has worked with include Peter Berg,[6][7] Steven Spielberg, and James Mangold.[3]

In the late 2000s King formed a sound design firm called The Dawgs Sound Design, which later became King SoundWorks. Since 2000, he has worked as a supervising sound designer[8] on films such as Ali, Red Dragon, The Family Man, Friday Night Lights, The Dukes of Hazzard, Beerfest, The Kingdom, Hancock, and Battleship. He has also worked as a sound editor on television programs including Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, Extant with Steven Spielberg, and The Last Ship with Michael Bay.[3]

In 2014, King was quoted in a Forbes article regarding questions to consider in a leadership position, asking "How much time do you spend not thinking about yourself or what you want?"[9] The article notes that as a business owner and father of three, he has had to minimize his personal agenda in order to keep things running smoothly.

Awards and nominations

Greg King was nominated for two Golden Reel Awards in a row for The Road to El Dorado (2000) and The Insider (2001).[10][11]
