George Christopher Honeyman (born 8 September 1994) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for Sunderland.
Career
Born in Prudhoe, Northumberland, Honeyman joined Sunderland's academy at the age of 10.[3] He made his professional debut on 15 February 2015 in the fifth round of the FA Cup, replacing Ricardo Álvarez for the final four minutes of a 2–0 loss at Valley Parade.[4] Manager Gus Poyet admitted that Honeyman would have been put on earlier had the team not had injury concerns, admitting that "George would have been coming on earlier because we needed a bit of his running between the lines and ability to make runs".[5] He was included in the matchday squad for one Premier League match that season, remaining unused in a 1–1 draw at Stoke City.[6]
On 16 October 2015, Honeyman was loaned to National League side Gateshead for a month, as fellow Sunderland youngster Lynden Gooch had done the previous season.[7] He made his league debut the following day, starting in a 2–2 draw against Altrincham at the Gateshead International Stadium.[8] On 31 October, he netted the first goal of his career, the winner in a 3–2 triumph at Boreham Wood.[9]
