Major General George Henry Inglis CB, CBE (22 August 1902 – 2 March 1979) was a senior British Army officer.[1]
Education
Inglis was educated at Ardvreck School, Crieff, Wellington College, Berkshire and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.[1]
Army
Inglis was appointed 2nd lieutenant with the Royal Artillery in 1922. During World War II he served in France, with South East Asia Command (SEAC) and Middle East Land Forces (MELF).[1] He was promoted to brigadier in 1944. In 1946 he was mentioned in despatches for service in Burma and also in 1949 for service in Palestine.[2][3]
In 1948 he was commanding officer of 18 Training Brigade, Oswestry. Inglis was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in June 1950.[4] From 1950-1952 he was commander of 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division.[5] He was promoted to Major General in 1951.[6] In 1952 he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath.[7]
Inglis was general commanding officer, Nigeria district from 1953-1956. He retired from the British Army in 1956.[8] From 1960-1967 he served as colonel commandant of the Royal Artillery.[1]
Appointments
Inglis was appointed Justice of the peace (JP) Cumberland in 1958; High Sheriff of Cumberland in 1961; deputy lieutenant of Cumberland, 1962 and vice-lieutenant of Cumberland, 1969-1974.[1][9][10] He also served as vice-president of The Royal British Legion from 1978-1979 and president of the North West area from 1973-1979.
