Frederick John Woodman (born 4 March 1997) is an English footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Newcastle United.
Woodman started his career at Crystal Palace before moving to the academy set up at Newcastle United in 2013.[3] Woodman has represented England up to U19 level and won the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship with his country.
Club career
2014–15 season
Loan to Hartlepool United
On 16 September 2014, Woodman was sent on a monthlong loan to Hartlepool[4] to gain experience of being in a first team environment. After six appearances as an unused substitute, Woodman returned to Newcastle.[5]
In December 2014, an injury crisis at Newcastle led to speculation that Woodman might make his first team debut for Newcastle United in the Tyne and Wear derby against Sunderland.[5][6][7] By the end of the season Woodman had established himself as the second choice keeper at Newcastle making a string of appearances on the bench.[8]
2015–16 season
Crawley Town
On 29 July 2015, Woodman was sent on another loan spell to Crawley Town for half of the 2015–16 season. His debut match was played on 8 August 2015 in a 1–1 draw against Oxford United.[9] Freddie Woodman has said "I'm really looking forward to it. It's a massive difference and it takes some getting used to, I'll take this experience back with me and say 'let's not come back here, let's play in the Premier League'." when asked about his loan spell by BBC.[10] When Mark Yates, the manager of Crawley Town, was asked about signing Woodman he said “We are delighted to have been able to bring one of the best young goalkeepers in the country to the club. The only thing Freddie lacks at the moment is experience in League football and that is what this loan spell with give him. He has all the attributes to become a top-class keeper and I have to thank Steve McClaren, Andy Woodman and everyone at Newcastle for letting us have Freddie for the first half of the season” during an interview with The Football League.[11]
Recall from loan
In October 2015, Newcastle United recalled Woodman from his loan at Crawley Town after first choice keeper Tim Krul suffered a season ending knee injury, Woodman made 12 appearances during his spell with Crawley.[12][13]
International career
Woodman won the 2014 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship with England, conceding two goals in 4 games and saving a penalty in the final of the tournament against Holland.[5][14] In the 2014–15 season Woodman played up an age group with the England U19 side.[8] On the 6th October Woodman made his debut at Under-21 level keeping a cleansheet in the process.
Personal life
He is the son of former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Andy Woodman and the godson of former England international defender Gareth Southgate.[15]
