Everard Verdon Bartlett (born 6 February 1986) is a New Zealand professional basketball player for the Hawke's Bay Hawks of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). The 193 cm combo guard has previously played in the Australian NBL for the New Zealand Breakers, Perth Wildcats and Adelaide 36ers.

Career

Early years

From 2005 to 2010, Bartlett played for the Hawke's Bay Hawks. He was also a development player for the New Zealand Breakers from 2005 to 2007, subsequently winning the Slam Dunk competition during the 2005–06 NBL All-Star weekend at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.[1]

In 2006, Bartlett was named the MVP of the National U23 Championships while playing for the New Zealand Institute of Sport (NZIS). Along with being named in the tournament team, the NZIS won the event as well.[2]

In September 2007, Bartlett signed with Iceland's Hottur Egilsstadir as an import for the 2007–08 season.[3][4] In what was a challenging season for Bartlett,[5] he averaged an impressive 28.1 points and 6.7 rebounds in 16 games.

Australia

Following the 2010 New Zealand NBL season, Bartlett moved to Perth and joined the Perth Wildcats as an extended training squad member for the 2010–11 season.

In November 2010, Bartlett joined the Western Tigers All-Star team that participated in the third Malaysian International Basketball Championship.[6] On 28 February 2011, Bartlett signed a short-term contract with the Geraldton Buccaneers of the State Basketball League.[7] In three games for the Buccaneers, he averaged 26.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game.[8] In April 2011, he joined the Auckland Pirates for the 2011 New Zealand NBL season.

After returning to Perth and starting the 2011–12 season with the Wildcats as a training player, Bartlett received a surprise call-up to the playing squad on 2 November 2011, signing with the Wildcats as an injury-waiver replacement for Damian Martin.[9][10] Three days later, he made his debut for the Wildcats, playing 11 minutes and recording four points in an 87–71 win over the Wollongong Hawks. On 27 November 2011, he played his final game for the Wildcats following the return of Damian Martin from injury.[11]

On 17 December 2011, Bartlett signed with the Adelaide 36ers as an injury replacement for Nathan Crosswell who ruptured his Achilles tendon and was ruled out for the rest of the season.[12] Following the conclusion of the 2011–12 season, he re-joined the Hawke's Bay Hawks for the 2012 New Zealand NBL season.

On 18 May 2012, Bartlett signed a two-year deal with the Perth Wildcats.[13] Following the conclusion of the 2012–13 season, he re-joined the Hawks for the 2013 New Zealand NBL season. On 12 June 2013, he was released from the second year of his two-year contract by the Wildcats.[14]

In January 2014, Bartlett re-signed with the Hawks for the 2014 season.[15] On 3 February 2015, he signed with the Ballarat Miners for the 2015 SEABL season.[16][17] On 3 May 2015, he recorded 16 points and a 2015 season league-best 17 assists in a win over the Frankston Blues.[18] In 16 games for Ballarat, he averaged 12.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game.[19]

Return to New Zealand

On 15 September 2015, Bartlett signed with the New Zealand Breakers to cover the absence of Corey Webster, who left the team to pursue a contract in the NBA.[20][21] On 16 October 2015, he signed with the Southland Sharks for the 2016 New Zealand NBL season, teaming up with Breakers teammates Alex Pledger and Duane Bailey at the club.[22] Four days later, he was retained by the Breakers for the rest of the 2015–16 season despite Webster returning from his NBA stint.[23] Bartlett impressed over the Breakers' first four games of the season, averaging 14.5 points per game on 16-of-29 shooting from three-point range.[24] However, he scored in double figures just one more time during the season, a 13-point game on 19 November against the Sydney Kings. The Breakers went on to lose to Bartlett's former team, the Perth Wildcats, in the 2016 grand final series.[25] He appeared in 32 of the team's 33 games in 2015–16, averaging 4.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per game.

On 20 September 2016, Bartlett signed with the Hawke's Bay Hawks for the 2017 season, returning to the franchise for the first time since 2014.[26][27]
