Ed Zitron is a public relations businessperson and author most commonly noted for his unconventional approach to the field of public relations. He is founder of the public relations firm EZPR and author of This Is How You Pitch: How To Kick Ass In Your First Years Of PR.
Background
In addition to Zitron's career in public relations, he has worked as a columnist at Forbes and Inc.com.[1] He previously wrote video game reviews for PC Zone magazine.[2][3]
Zitron's approach to public relations involves evaluating and appealing to the interests of individual media professionals through what are often brief email messages, rather than by sending mass email pitches, cold-calling, or brand-promotion newsletters.[1] Zitron is the founder and one of four employees at EZPR, a San Francisco-based public relations firm.[1][4][2]
A 2013 Forbes Magazine article characterized Zitron's public relations approach as one that "pays less attention to his clients’ overly-polished brand script and focuses more on what his media connections want to write about."[1] Several sources and Zitron himself have attributed his atypical work ethic to slight AD/HD and self-consciousness.[1][2]
This Is How You Pitch: How to Kick Ass in Your First Years of PR
In October 2013 Zitron released his book This Is How You Pitch: How To Kick Ass In Your First Years Of PR.[5] In the book, he recounts how his early experiences in public relations informed his unique methodologies.[5]
In a 2014 AdWeek interview, Zitron said the book was "written to help people; it is honest in terms of what I’ve seen work. I wrote it as honestly and grimly as possible, because this isn’t a job most people want to do or can do."[5]
CES Updog prank
In 2014 Zitron attended the Consumer Electronics Show as a journalist with the intention of covering the public relations aspect of the event. When he began receiving hundreds of mass-mailed public relations pitches that were sent to him over the course of the show, he responded by asking the senders: "Can you send me more information on Updog?" Many respondents asked "What is updog?," to which Zitron replied, "Not much, what's up with you?"[2]
Recognition
In 2013 Zitron was listed at number 46 in Business Insider's "The 2013 PR 50: The Best Public Relations People In The Tech Industry".[6] The following year, he was listed at number 7 of the same list.[7]
In 2015, AdWeek's PRNewser blog included Zitron among its list of the PR industry's 30 under 30.[8]
