Duncan Campbell (artist)

Duncan Campbell (born 1972)[1] is an Irish video artist, based in Glasgow.[2] He was the winner of the 2014 Turner Prize.[3]

Early life and education

Campbell was born in Dublin, and studied at the University of Ulster (BA, 1996) and the Glasgow School of Art (MFA, 1998).[1] He was born to a wealthy family and is heir to a €60m fortune. His father, Paddy Campbell, a businessman turned sculptor, built a successful catering company that was eventually bought by Aramark for €64.5m. His parents have featured on the Sunday Independent rich list for several years.[4]

Career

In 2008, he was awarded the Bâloise Prize.[1] In 2013, Campbell was one of the three artists chosen to represent Scotland at the Venice Biennale.[2]

On 1 December 2014, it was announced that he had won the 2014 Turner Prize.[3] Campbell took the prize for his video work "It for Others" – a work that reflects on African art and includes a dance sequence inspired by Karl Marx.[2]
