Derek Charles Blasberg (born April 22, 1982) is an American writer, editor and New York Times bestselling author. He is currently Vanity Fair's Our Man on the Street and a senior staffer of the Gagosian Gallery. He is also the host of CNN Style on CNN International.

Early life and education

Blasberg was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1982. After graduating as salutatorian of Affton High School’s class of 2000, he moved to New York City to attended New York University.[1] He graduated with honors and two degrees, dramatic literature and journalism, in 2004.[2] His first job was as an assistant at Vogue.[3]

Career

Blasberg is the Editor at Large of Vmagazine and VMAN,[4] as well as the founding U.S. Editor of the London-based arts publication Garage Magazine where he developed a popular column called 'Emails from the Edge'.[5] Before joining Vanity Fair, Blasberg was the Editor at Large of Harper’s Bazaar.[6] In his career, Blasberg has contributed articles to serveal leading fashion magazines. From 2006 to 2010, Blasberg was the Editor at Large of Style.com, where he wrote a column called The Blasblog.[7] From 2009 to 2012, he kept a column called Fast + Louche in Interview magazine.[8]

Blasberg joined the Gagosian Gallery in 2014.[9] One of Blasberg's roles at the gallery is contributing texts to its publications, including the 'In Conversation' series.[10]

Books

In April 2010, Blasberg's first book, Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady,[11] a collection of humorous essays about etiquette, was released by Penguin Books. The book was on the New York Times best sellers list for several weeks, has since been translated into several languages and published in countries in Asia, South America, and Europe.[12] In October 2011, Blasberg released Very Classy: Even More Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady,[13] which is an expanded and updated version of the original bestseller.

Blasberg is the author of 2015's "Harper's Bazaar: MODELS," which is a survey of the most important models and iconic images in fashion history.[14] In 2008, Blasberg edited Influence, a fashion and art tome conceived by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.[15] He has contributed texts and written forewords to several other books and literary projects in the fashion and art spheres. He served as coauthor to several of the New York City editions of the Louis Vuitton Travel Guides.[16]

Fashion consultant

As a fashion editor, Blasberg has collaborated with some of the industry’s most iconic image-makers including including Karl Lagerfeld, David Bailey, Terry Richardson and Marilyn Minter. Blasberg has also served as a consultant on creative projects for a long list of fashion brands, including Chanel, M.A.C Cosmetics, and Tiffany’s.[17]

Television

Blasberg is the host of CNN Style [18] He also hosts of several of Vanity Fair's web series, including Conversations In The Backseat, where he has interviewed Reese Witherspoon, Gigi Hadid, Naomi Campbell, Maria Sharapova, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.[19] In 2011, Blasberg was featured alongside friend Alexa Chung on the competitive reality TV show 24-Hour Catwalk.[20] He has appeared as a fashion expert on The Today Show[21] and the Nate Berkus Show.

Personal life

Blasberg currently lives in New York with a dachshund called Monster.[22]
