Darryl Wimberley
Amos Darryl Wimberley (born December 19, 1949 in St. Augustine, Florida) is an American writer. Having completed his secondary education at Lafayette County High School, Mayo, Florida, he entered the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in International Affairs. While still on active duty he completed graduate work at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas, and was awarded a Master of Arts in English Literature.
Upon separation from military service he entered the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin where he completed a Doctorate of Philosophy from the Radio-Television-Film department. He was hired as Assistant Regional Manager for a four-state region of cable television systems owned by Communications Properties, Inc., of the Times-Mirror Corporation.
He returned to Austin to write. Darryl has five critically acclaimed novels with St. Martin's Press in the Barrett Raines mystery series: A Rock and a Hard Place (1999), Dead Man's Bay (2000), Strawman's Hammock (2001) Pepperfish Keys (2007), and "Devil's Slew" (2011). A separate, literary work, A Tinker's Damn, was published in 2000 by MacMurray and Beck and won a Foreword Magazine Award for Best Literary Novel from independent publishers; another literary novel, The King of Colored Town, was published in 2007 by The Toby Press. That novel won the first Willie Morris Award for Fiction in 2008. His script Kaleidoscope was Grand Prize Winner for Fade In: Magazines 1998 competition; the novel "Kaleidoscope" based on that script was published by The Toby Press, 2008.
Darryl has taught writing and literature over many years at several institutions including the Radio/Television/Film Department at the University of Texas, Austin and the Department of English and Fine Arts at his alma mater, the United States Air Force Academy. He is married to Doris Constantine, Director of Financial Aid at St. Edward's University in Austin. Darryl and Doris have two children.
