Dalit Muslim

Dalit Muslim refers to Hindu Untouchables also called Dalit converts to Islam.[1][2][3]

Background

Dalits have been oppressed in the Hindu society due to Caste system.Majority of Indian Muslims are lower caste Hindu converts including Dalits .Despite conversion Dalit converts have not overcome discrimination and oppression as the Caste System is strongly ingrained presence in Indian society.They have faced discrimination from within the Muslim community.[4][5][6]

Dr Aftab Alam, a political scientist states

But caste and untouchability is a lived reality for Muslims living in India and South Asia," And untouchability is the community's worst-kept secret."

Reservation

Muslim and Christian Dalit converts lose Reservation which is only is available to Dalits who follow Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism under the Indian Government Reservation policy.National Commission for Minorities has suggested extending reservation to Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians.[7]
