"Crash Into Me" is a song by American rock group Dave Matthews Band. It was released in December 1996 as the third single from their second album, Crash. It reached number 7 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in March 1997. It is also featured on Dave Matthews Band's first compilation album, The Best of What's Around Vol. 1. The song was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 1998 Grammy Awards.
Background and writing
Dave Matthews wrote Crash into Me on the campus of Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia. The inspiration for the song stemmed from his wife, Ashley Harper, who is an alumna of the College.
Content
In his performance on VH1 Storytellers, Dave Matthews described this song as being about "the worship of women", albeit from a voyeur's perspective, and subsequently does a humorous impression of the woman being watched through the window complaining to the police. He ends by saying that he wrote this song instead of getting arrested.
Cover versions
The song has been covered by various artists including Stevie Nicks, who performed it on her 2008 Soundstage episode. Her version was later released as a single.[1] It has also been covered numerous times by Lee DeWyze, who cites Dave Matthews Band as one of his biggest musical influences. The House Jacks recorded an a cappella version on their album Drive.
