Corallus batesii, or Amazon Basin emerald tree boa, is a species of boa found in the tropical rainforests of South America. This species has been revalidated from the synonymy with Corallus caninus by Henderson and collagues in 2009.[2][3]

Description

Amazon Basin emerald boas have a yellow belly with a body color that is generally darker green with a dorsal stripe, often bordered by some black spots with enamel-white markings on the dorsum. It differs from Corallus caninus by the shape and the number of scales across snout; bigger than C. caninus, they grow to about 8 feet approaching 9 feet in length.[4]

Geographic range

The 'Basin' species', as the name suggests, is only found along the basin of the Amazon River, in southern Suriname, southern Venezuela to Colombia, Peru and Brazil and in the surrounding jungles of the Amazon River.[5]

Etymology

The specific or subspecific name, batesii, is in honor of Henry Walter Bates, an English naturalist and explorer, for whom Batesian mimicry is also named.[6]
