Christina McKelvie (born 4 March 1968) is a Scottish National Party (SNP) politician who is the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse constituency, first elected to this position in 2011. From 2007 to 2011 she sat as a MSP for the Central Scotland region. Since 2016 she has been the Convener of the Parliament's Equalities and Human Rights Committee.

Early life

McKelvie was born on 4 March 1968 in Glasgow, Scotland.[1] She grew up in Easterhouse, in the East End of the city. She was educated at St Leonard's Secondary School then went on to gain qualifications from Anniesland College, Cardonald College, and the University of St Andrews.[1] McKelvie worked in the social work services department of Glasgow City Council as a learning and development officer.[2] She has been an active trade unionist with Unison.[2]

Political career

In 2007, McKelvie was selected as the SNP candidate for the Hamilton South constituency where she was unsuccessful, however she was elected through the regional list to represent the Central Scotland region. In the 2011 election she stood in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse constituency and was elected for the constituency. She was convener of the European and External Relations Committee from 14 June 2011 to 23 March 2016.[3]

In 2016, she was re-elected to the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse constituency.[4][5] Within Parliament she became the Convener of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee.
