Chepstow Town F.C. are a Welsh football club based in Chepstow, South East Wales and founded in 1878. They were promoted to the Welsh Football League Division Three for the 2012-13 season from the Gwent County League . Founded in 1878 Chepstow Town AFC is the most easterly of all Welsh League Clubs, formerly named Chepstow Castle F.C the home fixtures have been played at various venues around the town from Bulwark to St.Arvans.
Up to the beginning of the First World War all the matches played where in the local Gwent league, but with the resumption of sport after the war the 1919-20 season saw Chepstow Town become co-founders of the Welsh League. This continued up to the mid twenties when relegation pushed the club out.
Chepstow then joined the Mon. County League for a couple of seasons before entering the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League for seasons 1928 to 1934, with this switch came some success and became league champions in the 1931-32 season. During this period of time Chepstow Town’s home ground was at St.Mary’s Institute (The Stute).
During World War two the St.Mary’s ground was taken over by the M.O.D and used as a supply depot for the war effort. However after the war, returning local servicemen wanting to revive football in the area reformed the club incorporating Chepstow Boys Club and Fairfield’s Football team in process re-joining the Mon. County League. These immediate years post war saw ‘Chep’ become the dominant club in the area and with that success the team achieved crowds rose in numbers, it was not uncommon for 200 to 300 people to watch Chepstow’s fixtures.
It was from the mid fifties up to the mid sixties that arguably Chepstow Town were at their best, with a nucleus of good local players and a hard working committee the reward was promotions back to the Welsh League and the team became Division 2 champions in the 1964-65 season. Unfortunately after 3 seasons it was decided to opt out of the Welsh League due to pre-motorway travelling and the onset of financial difficulties.
Chepstow Town then joined the newly formed Gwent Premier League, having started in Division 3 the club quickly gained promotion to Division 1. With a more professional attitude from all concerned in the football club and the ambition to provide the best standard of football for local players Chepstow Town regained Welsh League status.
In the late 80’s the club was forced to move from the St.Mary’s ground due to the towns road expansion plans and were relocated at the clubs present Larkfield Park ground. Chepstow Town Football Club has always been served by local lads with support from players from further afield and has good ties with father and sons playing and in some cases grandfather/father/son continuation.
Over the years Chepstow has been graced by some notable managers including Brian Harris (Ex. Everton FA Cup Winner) and Barry Vassallo (Ex. Arsenal & Plymouth Argyle). Other players of note associated with the blue and white Quarters of Chepstow were Alwyn’Ollie’Burton of Newport County, Norwich, Newcastle and Wales. Colin’Rocky’Hudson of Cardiff City and Harry Harris of Portsmouth and Wales.
