Chandanaish (Bengali: চন্দনাইশ) is an Upazila of Chittagong District[1] in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh.
Geography
Chandanaish is located at 22°12′40″N 92°02′30″E / 22.2111°N 92.0417°E . It has 30,189 households and a total area of 201.99 km².
Demographics
According to the 1991 Bangladesh census, Chandanaish had a population of 172,843. Males constituted 51.27% of the population, and females 48.73%. The population aged 18 or over was 81,653. Chandanaish had an average literacy rate of 33.9% (7+ years), compared to the national average of 32.4%.[2]

History
Chandanaish is one of the first inhabitant of the early settlers of Chittagong. Muslim traders and preachers from the then Islamic worlds had been settling in Chittagong due to the close proximity of Chandanaish from the river Karnaphuly. However, the Muslim settlement was permanently established when the medieval Islamic invasion occurred in Chittagong.
Chandanaish was previously part of Patiya upazila. In 1976, Chandanaish was separated from Patiya and established as Chandanaish thana and in 1983 it became an upazila.
Notable people
- Nazrul Islam Chowdhury: He is a veteran politician and a freedom fighter who played a major role in the 1971 Liberation War. He was a member of the Bangladesh Awami League National Committee. He is also a member of the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry Parliamentary Standing Committee of the 10th National Parliament of Bangladesh. He is currently the sitting MP from Chandanaish-Satkania constituency. His popularity amongst the people of Chandanaish is humongous. He was born in Kanchan Nagar and hails from an illustrious family. He studied Humanities as part of his university degree and studied Law also. He is a construction mogul. After his parent's name he founded Abu Moriom Diabetic Hospital, Abu Moriom Women Residential Madrasha and Orphanage.. He is also one of the founder of Kanchanabad High School. In 1969 he founded Bangladesh Chatra League in Gachbaria College and was the founding President. He has been the President of Chandanaish Upazila Awami League for a span of 17 years.Under his leadership Chandanaish Awami League is believed to have reached new heights. Chandanaish and parts of Satkania which falls under his constituency has witnessed massive development in the last couple of years ever since he has been elected.
- Eng. Afsaruddin Ahmed: He is a freedom fighter (Commander of Chittagong Zila) who played a major role in the 1971 Liberation War, very well known politician, famous industrialist & founder of BGC Trust Foundation (Medical, University, College & School) and Alltex Group (www.alltexbd.com) Mr. Afsar born in Kanchanagar, Chandanaish. Studied in Civil Department of BUET. He is scholar and very well known social leader.
- Hazrat Moulana Moslehuddin: Former Principal of Jamia Ahmedia Sunnia Alia madrasha, Wajedia Ali Madrasha, Sobhania Ali Madrasha Chittagong. Islamic scholar who was awarded by president & prime minister as "best principal" at national level.
- M. M. Munsef Ali: Mr. Munsef Ali was a former election commissioner of Bangladesh. He served as the district judge of several districts of Bangladesh prior to his role as the election commissioner of Bangladesh. Mr. Ali was born in the village of Keshua under Chandanaish upazila, and is from a noble family of the village. His Father, Maulana Fadlul Karim Taloukder, was a religious scholar and a social leader.
- Dr. Nurul Islam: Hailed as the national professor of Bangladesh, Dr. Islam was a prominent educationalist, medical scientist and researcher, and a social worker. He played the leading role of the anti-tobacco movement. Because of his excellent contribution to the field of medicine, and to the society, he was honored many times nationally and internationally.[3]
- Sham'a Bangla Moulana Ala uddin shah (rh.): An Islamic scholar on Hadith and sunnah. Ex chief of hadith department at subhania ali madrasah,ctg.Moulana Alauddin was born in a noble family of moulana manzil on the village of chandanaish municipal area, ward no-02 under the chandanaish upozila, His Father was Maulana mufti shafiur rahman and mother asama khatun.he was a religious scholar and famous sunni leader
