Canberra Olympic FC is an Australian semi-professional soccer club based in the suburb of O'Connor in the north of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. The club was founded in 1955, and currently competes in the National Premier Leagues Capital Football.
History
Olympic was founded in the early 1950s by the local Greek community of Canberra.[1] Formally the name Olympic was decided in a General Meeting of players and committee member in 1955. The names proposed for the team was either Olympic or AEK.
Olympic have won the ACT top division premiership on six occasions under the names Canberra Olympic, Olympic and Downer Olympic. The most recent title was the ACT Premier League in 2016.[2]
In addition to this, Olympic have won six grand finals. The most recent was the 2016 National Premier Final, defeating Canberra FC 3 – 0.
In 1980, as Downer Olympic, the club won the premiership ahead of Croatia Deakin by one goal. Both clubs finished on 32 points after scoring 53 goals each.
The club won 'the double' in 1993 and repeated this achievement in 1994.
On 1 June 2016, Canberra Olympic qualified for their debut in the FFA Cup with a victory over Cooma. In the Round of 32, Olympic met Gold Coast Premier League side Surfers Paradise Apollo Soccer Club, winning 1–0 through a Philippe Bernabo-Madrid goal at Deakin Stadium in Canberra in front of 1,253 people.[3] In the Round of 16, Olympic defeated NPL Queensland side Redlands United FC 2–0, who, in the Round of 32, knocked out reigning Australian champions Adelaide United. The match was again played in front of over 1,000 people at Deakin Stadium with two penalties to the home side settling the tie.[4]
