Cambridge Crown Court
Cambridge Crown Court is a Crown Court in Cambridge, England. The Resident Judge since summer 2009 is His Honour Judge Gareth Hawkesworth.[1] His Honour Judge Jonathan Haworth is Diversity and community relations judge for the court, and was formerly Resident Judge.[2]
Description
The building sits on East Road, Cambridge and opened in June 2004. It was designed by Austin-Smith:Lord and contains three courts.[3] It was financed via a Private Finance Initiative, with Modern Courts (East Anglia) Limited building the premises and managing them for 25 years.[4] It is in the first tier of the courts system. The court was previously held in the Cambridge Guildhall.[5]
Cases
The court gained the power to try murder cases in 2005.[5]
- September 2009 - Rekha Kumari-Baker was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 33 years, for the murder of her two daughters. They were killed as they slept, Kumari-Baker stabbing them 69 times in total.[6]
- November 2015 - Mark Mosley was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 30 years, for the murder of fellow traveller Jessie Smith with a sawn-off shotgun after a New Year's Eve dispute. He was also convicted of attempted murder of another traveller, Paul 'Rambo' Smith. [7]
