Buddleja davidii 'Notbud' (selling name Masquerade) originated as a sport, or mutant, of the variegated 'Harlequin', itself a sport of 'Royal Red', raised and patented by the Notcutt nursery in England.[1]

Description

Masquerade is considered aesthetically superior to 'Harlequin', growing marginally higher and with flowers of a more reddish hue.[1][2]

Cultivation

Masquerade has had only a limited impact on the UK and remains uncommon; it is not known to be cultivated outside the UK. The specimen once grown as part of the NCCPG national collection held by the Longstock Park Nursery near Stockbridge died in the winter of 2010-11 after years of weak growth.[2] Like most variegated shrubs, the plant suffers from reversion, where non-variegated shoots emerge.[3] Hardiness: USDA zones 6–9.[3]
