Brahmanbaria Medical College (BMC) (Bengali: ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া মেডিকেল কলেজ) is a private university in Bangladesh, which began educating students in 2013. It is located in Ghatura, Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila, Brahmanbaria, and is affiliated with University of Chittagong as a constituent college.

It offers a five-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. One-year internships after graduation are common, but not compulsory for all graduates. The degree is recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.

The university building is attached to a 250-bed hospital, which also publishes a formal medical journal: Brahmanbaria Medical College Journal.

History

Brahmanbaria Medical College was established in 2010 but did not start accepting students until the 2013-2014 academic year when the school was granted affiliation.[2] The first class consisted of 50 students but has since grown to 80 enrolled students.

Campus

The college is located in Brahmanbaria Sadar, Brahmanbaria.[3] The college's six-story academic building is attached to a six-story, 250-bed teaching hospital, Brahmanbaria Medical College Hospital.[4] Due to the campus being attached to a hospital, there is a strict no-smoking policy on university property.[5] The hospital is equipped with an ambulance service and a hemodialysis unit which operates at all hours of the day. Due to space limitations, professors and consultants for the hospital will provide services outdoors during daylight hours. If the patient is in need of extra care, or more assistance, then they are sent inside.[6]

Organization and administration

The college is affiliated with Chittagong University as a constituent college.[3][7] The chairman of the college is Dr. Md. Abu Sayed.[8] The principal is Prof. Brig. Gen. (RTD) Md. Shafiqul Islam.[1]

Academics

The college offers a five-year course of study, approved by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), leading to a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Chittagong University. After passing the final professional examination, there is a compulsory one-year internship. The internship is a prerequisite for obtaining registration from the BMDC to practice medicine.[3][9] In October 2014, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare capped admission and tuition fees at private medical colleges at 1,990,000 Bangladeshi taka (US$25,750 as of 2014) total for their five-year courses.[10]

Admission for Bangladeshis to the MBBS programme at all medical colleges in Bangladesh (government and private) is conducted centrally by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). It administers a written multiple choice question exam simultaneously throughout the country. Candidates are admitted based primarily on their score on this test, although grades at Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) level also play a part. Seats are reserved, according to quotas set by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), for children of Freedom Fighters and for students from underprivileged backgrounds.[11] As of July 2014, the college is allowed to admit 50 students annually.[12]
