Boibe

Boibe (Greek: Βοίβη) was a town and lake of ancient Thessaly, mentioned in the Homeric "Catalogue of Ships" passage:[1] And they that dwelt in Pherae beside the lake Boebeïs, and in Boebe, and Glaphyrae, and well-built Iolcus, these were led by the dear son of Admetus with eleven ships. According to Strabo,[2] Boibe participated in the 3rd century BC synoecism of Demetrias.

Boibe was also a dependent town of Gortys in the plain of Mesara, Crete.[3] (modern Pompia or Pobia)[4] The modern Thessalian locations bear the names Kanalia and Lake Karla. According to Károly Kerényi, Boibe is a dialectal form of Phoibe, a surname of Artemis.[5]
