Big Walnut High School is a public high school located in Sunbury, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Big Walnut Local School District. It was established in 1950. The current building was built in 1991 and has a student population of almost 1,000.
The school's mascot is the golden eagle.
School Information
The current building was built in 1991, after the district decided that a new high school was needed. The old high school building, which opened in 1950 when Sunbury, Galena and Harlem Township High Schools merged, became Big Walnut Middle School. The middle school has since built a new building. The high school just completed a multimillion-dollar renovation that added extra classrooms and an atrium to the entryway.
Academics
Big Walnut recently earned a second "Excellent" designation from the Ohio Department of Education for outstanding student learning and achievements during the 2006-2007 school year. The school offers over 111 courses and a program of study that includes Advanced Placement or Honors opportunities in American History, American Literature, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English 10, French 4, German 3 and 4, Physics, Physical Science, Spanish 3 and 4, Government. During the 2006-2007 school year, the school administered AP tests in Calculus AB, English Literature & Composition, and German Language.[4]
Athletics
The Big Walnut Golden Eagles football team participates in the Ohio High School Athletic Association, in Division II and is a member of the Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) Capital Division. The Eagles finished the 2007 season with a record-breaking 14-1 season, winning the Division III State Championship with a 17-10 victory over Licking Valley at Canton Fawcett Stadium. Their only loss of the season came at the hands of their rival New Albany High School (Ohio).[5] This marks the first time that any school in Delaware County has ever won a state title in football. The school also sponsors basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, softball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, golf, tennis, lacrosse, swimming, cross-country and track, most of which compete in the OCC. Their longtime rivals are the Olentangy Braves; however, they have developed rivalries with other area schools including New Albany, Westerville Central and Watkins Memorial. They are best known for commonly losing to New Albany in all sports.
